What did Dean Cain say? Superman actor called out over mocking Supergirl Milly Alcock appearance

Dean Cain has found himself in hot water recently, after his reaction to a post mocking Supergirl actress Milly Alcock’s appearance sparked outrage among superhero fans. Cain, who is fifty-nine years old, is famous for portraying the Man of Steel on Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. The actor took to X, reposting a photo of Alcock, who is twenty-six years old, suited up in her Supergirl costume with pierced ears, asking,

“Wait… if Supergirl’s skin is bulletproof, how does she have ear piercings?”

That being said, it was his reaction to another user’s comment that truly set things off. The user had compared Alcock to Cha-Ka, an ape-like character from Land of the Lost, attaching a photo alongside the comparison. Dean Cain simply replied,

“Dang it, I laughed.”

The actor’s response spread rapidly across social media, a situation which has left a number of superhero fans outraged.

Dean Cain faces backlash as fans react to Milly Alcock post:

The comments on the post were directed at both the original post uploader and Cain himself.

“You must be such a sad person to troll another human out of nowhere like that for likes. I hope you find happiness,” shared an user.

Another user took a dig at Dean Cain’s career, sharing,

“Congrats on getting the failed F-list actor from the 90s to notice you.”

Others went further, sharing photos of Dean Cain from past to present to mock his appearance. One user wrote,

“You went from man of tomorrow to man of ‘eh, I’ll eat healthier tomorrow.'”

Not everyone was critical of Dean Cain, though. Some fans sided with his reaction, bringing up former Supergirl actresses Helen Slater and Melissa Benoist in the process. As per a report shared by X, one user wrote,

“No doubt. At least Helen and Melissa were cute.”

Dean Cain eventually stepped in to address the chaos that followed his comment. One user had come to Alcock’s defence, pointing the finger at the film’s marketing team rather than the actress herself.

“Thing is, Millie Alcock isn’t ugly. They just put out terrible pictures of her. Movie is gonna su*k though,” the user wrote.

Cain was quick to clarify his position, sharing,

“I never said she was ugly.”

When the backlash continued to pour in, Cain posted a gif captioned “Can’t see the problem,” adding,

“The SUPERGIRL bots and virtue-signalers are in full ‘activated’ mode… Why so sensitive? It’s not even out yet.”

The debate then shifted toward the legacy of the Supergirl role itself. Another user weighed in, sharing that Helen Slater remained the true Supergirl in their eyes. Cain responded warmly to that sentiment, writing,

“Helen is lovely. Thought Melissa was wonderful, too.”

Melissa Benoist brought Kara Zor-El to life across six seasons of The CW’s Supergirl. As the Arrowverse’s version of the character, Benoist took on major villains like Lex Luthor and the Anti-Monitor, and formed what became known as the Arrowverse’s Trinity alongside Stephen Amell’s Green Arrow and Grant Gustin’s The Flash.

She also shared the screen with Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman, before Hoechlin went on to lead his own series, Superman & Lois. Now, five years after Supergirl season six debuted, Milly Alcock is set to take on the role.

Speaking to Screen Rant in March 2024, Benoist was asked what she was most excited to see in this new version of Supergirl’s story. The actress shared that every version of the character was exciting

“because of what she stands for.”

Benoist also expressed hope that with every new take on the DC hero, someone would see themselves in it. For the Arrowverse star, it all came down to Supergirl being

“valuable for young women.”
