The comedian also revealed her Sports Illustrated cover and shared surprising dating confessions
Tiffany Haddish brought her full energy to the Today show on Tuesday, May 12, and the program’s male anchors had very little chance of surviving the encounter with their composure intact. The 46-year-old comedian and actress arrived with news worth celebrating — she is one of four cover models on the upcoming Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue — but it was her sharp improvisational instincts that sent the studio into a collective meltdown.
The appearance was everything longtime fans of Haddish would expect: quick, irreverent and completely unpredictable, with several of the show’s most familiar faces ending up in the hot seat before she was done.
A ring-side seat for some live television chaos
The trouble started early in the segment when Haddish noticed co-host Craig Melvin fidgeting with his wedding ring on camera. She wasted no time calling him out in front of the entire studio, pointing at him directly and making it plain she had clocked every move. Melvin, 46, immediately denied any implication and went into damage-control mode, loudly declaring his happiness in his 15-year marriage to sportscaster Lindsay Czarniak, which began in 2011.
Co-host Savannah Guthrie attempted to smooth things over by offering a lighthearted physical excuse for the ring fidgeting, but Haddish was not finished. She kept the pressure on Melvin, threatening to inform his wife and suggesting he might want to consider her own current approach to romance, which involves being her own primary partner.
In a bid to redirect attention, Melvin gestured toward weatherman Al Roker and fellow co-host Carson Daly, which only handed Haddish more targets. She greeted Roker warmly and turned her commentary toward him just as quickly. Roker, 71, leaned into the fun, joking that Melvin had effectively ended one of his relationships right there on set.
The segment only escalated when Melvin let it slip that Haddish would be returning for the fourth hour of the program. She fired back by suggesting she had already done enough damage and pointed out, in front of the entire studio audience, that a noticeable sweat had broken out on his forehead. Roker cheerfully confirmed the observation, much to Melvin’s obvious discomfort and the considerable delight of everyone watching.
A history with Carson Daly
The second wave of mayhem involved Carson Daly, 52, who found himself on the receiving end of Haddish’s recollections about their early days in the entertainment industry. She claimed the two had a flirtatious dynamic in the early 2000s that could have developed into something more serious.
Daly offered a partial acknowledgment, conceding that the right circumstances may have existed at some point, but stopped well short of confirming any specifics. Haddish pressed further, suggesting his hesitation came from nerves rather than a lack of chemistry. When Daly disputed that version of events, Haddish made it clear she was fully capable of detailing the timeline. That was all it took to prompt a quick and emphatic appeal from Daly for her continued discretion, which she graciously agreed to maintain.
A Sports Illustrated cover and an active dating life
The official reason for Haddish’s appearance was the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, where she joins three other women on the cover. True to form, she also used the platform to offer candid updates on her personal life.
During the later fourth-hour segment with Jenna and Sheinelle, Haddish described herself as actively open to meeting people and revealed that her recent dating range has been notably wide. The youngest man she has gone out with recently is 35, while the oldest is 83. She described the evening with the 83-year-old as a genuine highlight, praising him as funny, financially successful and impressively knowledgeable. She noted the date turned out to be unexpectedly educational, covering investment strategies, herbal knowledge and a firsthand perspective on life in the early 20th century.
Whether any of those connections develop further remains to be seen, but Haddish made it perfectly clear she has absolutely no intention of narrowing her options.
