Resident Evil Requiem gets a free DLC: Leon Must Die

The free Leon Must Die Forever roguelike mode is live for players who finished the game

Capcom has quietly dropped a free mini-game mode for Resident Evil Requiem, adding a roguelike survival challenge to a game that has already sold more than 7 million copies since launch. The move follows a long-standing tradition in the franchise of rewarding players who complete the main story with something worth coming back for.

The mode, called Leon Must Die Forever, was released as a surprise addition on May 8 for all players who own the base game and have finished the main campaign. Director Koshi Nakanishi and producer Masato Kumazawa had hinted publicly in the days before the launch that players should make sure they had completed the story. In hindsight, that was the clearest possible signal of what was coming.

What Leon Must Die Forever actually is

Leon Must Die Forever is a self-contained game mode built around Leon Kennedy, one of the franchise’s most recognized characters, and designed explicitly around replayability rather than story progression. The structure follows roguelike principles: players attempt to clear 20 stages before a final boss battle against a character named Victor, and death sends them back to the very beginning.

Weapons, abilities and items are fully randomized at the start of each run, which means no 2 playthroughs are ever the same. Difficulty scales as players advance through the stages, and multiple difficulty tiers are available, including an extreme option that Capcom specifically cautions is intended only for the most prepared players.

Players can also redeem points earned in the main campaign for item unlocks within the mode, and 11 new challenges are included for players who want additional goals beyond simply surviving to the end. There is no extra cost. Players need only to own the base game and have completed the main story.

The mode arrived as part of a broader update that also addressed minor bugs and added adaptive triggers, vibration and motion sensor support for the PS5’s DualSense controller.

How to access it

Players who want to try Leon Must Die Forever need to complete the main Resident Evil Requiem campaign, update the game to version 1.300.000 and then select Extra Games from the main menu. The mode appears there as a selectable option once those conditions are met.

The experience is designed to feel different from the main game. Where the campaign uses a narrative structure with deliberate pacing and environmental exploration, Leon Must Die Forever strips that away entirely in favor of speed, pressure and the unpredictability that comes with randomized runs. Capcom describes the fast-paced action as something distinctly separate from the tone and feel of the main story.

How it fits into Resident Evil’s Must Die tradition

Players who have followed the franchise closely will recognize the naming convention. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard shipped with Ethan Must Die, a mode that placed players through the Baker estate with randomized weapon drops, limited resources and a final confrontation with Marguerite. Resident Evil Village offered Village of Shadows, which raised enemy aggression and damage to levels the main game never approached.

These modes have consistently become some of the most discussed post-launch content in the series, largely because they strip away the safety structures of the main campaign and force players to engage with game systems in a more demanding and unpredictable way. Leon Must Die Forever continues that tradition while expanding the design with a more elaborate roguelike structure spread across 20 discrete stages.

What comes next for Resident Evil Requiem

Capcom has confirmed that paid DLC is still in development for Resident Evil Requiem, meaning Leon Must Die Forever functions as a free bridge while larger content updates continue to take shape. A story expansion has been rumored for a potential 2026 release, though no specific date has been announced. For players who have already finished the main campaign, the free mode offers a concrete reason to return while the next major announcement takes form.
