Paapa Essiedu receives racist threats after his Snape role

The British actor, set to play Severus Snape in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series, spoke candidly about the racist abuse and online death threats he has received since his casting

Paapa Essiedu was announced as the actor set to play Severus Snape in HBO’s highly anticipated Harry Potter television series, it was a landmark casting moment not only for the acclaimed British stage actor, but for a franchise that has been a cultural touchstone for millions of fans around the world.

What followed, however, was something far darker. In a candid interview published March 21 by The Times of London, Essiedu described the racist abuse and explicit death threats he has received since the April 2025 announcement, offering a sobering account of what it means to take on an iconic role while navigating targeted online harassment.

What he has been reading online

Essiedu, 35, was direct about the nature of the messages he has encountered. He described coming across comments on Instagram threatening to come to his home and harm him the kind of language that, even when likely not acted upon, carries a real psychological weight. He acknowledged that he is probably not in physical danger while also noting that no one should ever have to make that calculation simply because of their profession.

He was equally clear that stepping away from social media is not a straightforward solution. Even when a person avoids looking, the content does not disappear friends and colleagues see it and reach out with concern, which means the impact filters through regardless.

What makes his situation particularly striking is his decision not to report the threats to authorities. His reasoning was matter-of-fact: he does not believe a brief legal consequence for the person responsible would meaningfully change how he feels or address the broader problem. He framed the issue as endemic rather than isolated, suggesting that individual reports would do little to shift what he sees as a systemic challenge.

Using the negativity as motivation

Rather than retreating, Essiedu has found a way to redirect the hostility into something more purposeful. He described the abuse as a source of fuel something that has sharpened rather than diminished his commitment to making the role his own.

Central to that motivation is a sense of representation. Essiedu spoke about what it would have meant to him as a child to see someone who looked like him occupying a meaningful place in the world of Hogwarts. That image a younger version of himself finding a reflection in one of fiction’s most complex characters is, he said, a far more powerful force than any anonymous threat designed to drive him away from the work.

The role of Snape was originated on screen by the late Alan Rickman, whose portrayal across eight films became one of the most celebrated performances in the franchise’s history. Essiedu is stepping into that legacy with full awareness of what it carries, and his comments suggest he is approaching the task with both seriousness and genuine personal investment.

A decade long commitment he is ready to embrace

Beyond the controversy, Essiedu was also reflective about the sheer scale of what he has signed up for. The HBO series is expected to be an extensive production, and he noted that he will be 45 years old by the time filming concludes meaning the project will span a significant portion of his adult life. He acknowledged that his world will look very different by the end of it, possibly including starting a family.

Rather than expressing anxiety about that prospect, he described it as something he is prepared to surrender to a conscious acceptance of the transformation that comes with taking on a commitment of this magnitude.

Essiedu joins a cast that includes John Lithgow, Janet McTeer and Nick Frost. The series does not yet have a confirmed premiere date, but anticipation around it has remained high since the initial casting announcements began last year. If Essiedu’s resolve is any indication, the noise surrounding his involvement is unlikely to slow him down.
