Jake Reiner has been maintaining his silence around the tragic events of his parents’ passing. But months later, the couple’s eldest son is finally opening up about how he dealt with his parents’ death. He is also addressing an even more important aspect: the involvement of his brother Nick Reiner.
Last year December, Jake Reiner released a statement with his sister Romy asking for privacy as they dealt with the tragedy of their parents. Now, Jake Reiner has written a lengthy, heartbreaking essay about his parents, and what he went through as he processed that grief.
Jake chose his words carefully, as he acknowledged Nick’s involvement in the case and what it’s like to lose both your parents on the same day and have your brother be at the centre of it. He also emphasixed the family’s need for privacy, and that he asks for love and compassion from everyone.
Talking about his brother and his involvement, Jake Reiner wrote,
We lost more than half of our family that night in the most violent way imaginable. Sure, any loss of a parent is devastating, but nothing compares to losing both of them at the same time and, on top of that, having your brother be at the center of it. It’s almost too impossible to process. I understand that people have questions about what happened. Some of those answers will come in time. But some parts of this belong only to our family, and keeping them private is the only way to protect what little remains of something that was taken from us.
More details about Rob and Michele’s death

On December 13 and 14, 2025 the tragedy took place. The night before the killings, Rob, Michele, and Nick had all attended a Christmas party hosted by Conan O’Brien at his West Los Angeles home.
Police were called to the Brentwood home at around 3:30 in the next afternoon where Rob and Michele were found dead inside and there was no forced entry. Nick had been living on his parents’ property at the time, and had a well-documented history of drug addiction as well as a reported schizophrenia diagnosis.
He was arrested later that night, charged with two counts of first-degree murder, and has pleaded not guilty. He’s been sitting in custody without bail ever since, with a preliminary hearing coming up on April 29.
