GM launches bold Silverado to exploit Ford F-150 slump

Ford’s bestselling truck is running dry, and GM just showed up with its most powerful Silverado ever

General Motors has picked its moment carefully. As Ford struggles to keep its signature F-150 on dealer lots, GM is pulling back the curtain on the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado — a truck the company is calling the most powerful and advanced Silverado ever built.

The reveal lands at an awkward time for Ford, whose F-150 remains the benchmark of the full-size truck segment and the bestselling truck in the country. But a deepening supply squeeze has been dragging down F-150 sales, leaving a window wide open for GM to make its move.

Silverado gets its most powerful engine lineup ever

At the heart of the redesign is a new powertrain strategy built around V8 power. The 2027 Silverado introduces next-generation 5.7-liter and 6.6-liter V8 engines, which Chevrolet claims give it the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 in its class. GM has been doubling down on V8 investment as consumer demand for the engine type has remained strong despite broader industry pressure to electrify.

The truck retains four powertrain options in total — the two new V8s, an enhanced 2.7-liter TurboMax four-cylinder paired with a 10-speed transmission, and the segment-exclusive Duramax 3.0-liter turbo-diesel. The V8 engines will be assembled at GM facilities in Flint, Michigan, Tonawanda, New York, and St. Catharines, Ontario.

The 2027 model also expands to a seven-trim lineup, including three lifted configurations — the ZR2 for serious off-road buyers, the Trail Boss, and the Custom Trail Boss — alongside the Work Truck, Custom, Silverado, and High Country. The styling is completely overhauled, featuring more angular bodywork, new LED lighting front and rear, more defined wheel-opening moldings, and standard dual exhaust on Custom trim and above. Chevrolet says the sharper design language signals a clear departure from the outgoing generation.

Inside, Silverado goes all-in on digital

The cabin has been completely rethought around a digital-first architecture. Every 2027 Silverado comes standard with a 16.3-inch center display and a 12.2-inch driver information center. ZR2 and High Country buyers get an additional 11.5-inch front passenger screen, a head-up display, and a rear camera mirror — adding up to more than 60 inches of combined digital display real estate across the dash.

GM’s Super Cruise hands-free driving system is also on offer, bringing a level of driver-assistance technology that positions the Silverado more squarely against the tech-forward features found in newer truck competitors.

Ford’s stumble opens the door

The Silverado reveal lands at a moment Ford would rather not be in the spotlight. The F-150 has long been the gold standard of the truck segment, but the current supply crunch has made it difficult for buyers to find one — and dealers are feeling the pressure. GM is not being subtle about the timing.

Scott Bell, vice president of Global Chevrolet, framed the new truck as the culmination of decades of earned trust. The company says it is building the most capable, refined, and advanced Silverado it has ever offered, and the powertrain investment reflects a deliberate bet that truck buyers still want V8 options even as other segments shift toward electrification.

When can buyers get one

GM confirmed the 2027 Silverado 1500 will go on sale before the end of 2026, built at its full-size truck plants in North America — which includes facilities in Canada and Mexico in addition to domestic plants. The company has not yet confirmed whether trucks assembled at those international plants will be distributed within the country, a question carrying particular weight given ongoing trade and tariff discussions. Pricing and full availability details are expected later this year.

The truck market is heading into one of its more competitive stretches in years. The Silverado’s redesign — timed deliberately to land while Ford works through its supply issues — signals that GM is not content to cede any ground in the segment that matters most to its bottom line. That confidence is not unfounded — Silverado has consistently ranked as the second-bestselling truck in the country, and GM is betting this redesign narrows that gap further.
