One of the most recognized names in American chocolate has issued a sweeping recall covering 13 of its powdered beverage mix products, and while no confirmed illnesses have been reported, the potential risk is serious enough that anyone who may have purchased the affected items needs to act now.
The Ghirardelli Chocolate Company announced the recall after California Dairies Inc., a third-party supplier, issued a broader recall of its powdered milk products over potential Salmonella contamination. Because Ghirardelli uses California Dairies as a supplier for select powdered beverage mixes, the company moved to pull the potentially affected products as a precautionary measure.
What makes this recall unusual
The recalled products were originally manufactured for bulk distribution to restaurants and other food service institutions rather than individual consumers. However, Ghirardelli has acknowledged that some of the affected mixes may have made their way to individual buyers through e-commerce platforms, meaning home consumers could have the products without realizing they fall under the recall.
That distinction matters because it widens the pool of people who may be at risk beyond professional food service operators. Anyone who purchased Ghirardelli powdered beverage mixes in bulk quantities online in recent months should check their products carefully against the recalled lot numbers.

What Salmonella can do and when to seek help
Ghirardelli has stated that neither it nor California Dairies has received any confirmed reports of Salmonella infections linked to these products, and that none of the recalled mixes have tested positive for contamination. The recall is being conducted out of an abundance of caution rather than in response to a confirmed health event.
That said, Salmonella is not something to take lightly. In otherwise healthy individuals, an infection typically produces fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. For young children, elderly individuals, and people with compromised immune systems, however, Salmonella infections can escalate quickly and in some cases become fatal.
Anyone who still has the recalled products should not consume them. Those who have already consumed a recalled mix should monitor themselves closely for symptoms. Anyone experiencing signs of a Salmonella infection should contact a healthcare provider promptly.
