From showrunners Jeff Pinker and John Griffin announced that most of the show’s mysteries were hidden in the episode ‘Long Day’s Journey Into Night.’ The episode prompted the show’s followers to revisit the plot again to find connections related to the town, why everyone was trapped in a loop, and the true identity of the monsters.
Griffin and Pinker have previously discussed the show’s information distribution philosophy. According to them, information is never given to the audience before the characters know it. For instance, the audience got information about the Talismans in episode 1 after Jim Matthews and his family got them. Later, Father Khatri explicitly explains the Talismans’ function to Jim and Tabitha during a tour of the town.
Audiences might have missed the mysteries of the fallen tree, the crows, the endless road loop, the smiling night monsters, the talismans, and the boy in the white suit in the pilot episode of the show. The creators have highlighted these mysteries for the fans so that they can connect and rearrange the story on their own before watching the Season 4 finale on MGM+.

From Season 1 Episode 1: Hidden mysteries connecting the entire show
The fallen tree and the crows
Episode 1’s fallen tree and a flock of ominous crows are shown every time a new group of outsiders is brought into the town’s cycle. For example, in the episode ‘Choosing Day,’ Donna and Tabitha confirmed that everyone saw the same fallen tree and the same flock of crows before they got trapped.
The mystery further connects directly to a scene in Season 2 Episode 1, when the passengers of the Grand Rapids city bus experienced the same blockage. The phenomenon also continues in the Mouse Trap when Pastor Dunne is trapped after seeing the tree and meeting a young girl named Sophia.
The endless road loop
In the pilot, viewers saw the Matthews family leave Fromville by car to discover why every road led them back to the same town center. While driving, they came face to face with the fallen tree and turned around and drove straight through the town center. They couldn’t find the highway because they were trapped in the small town’s loop.
Audiences can find similar mysteries in Season 1’s episode 2, episode 6, and episode 10, Season 2’s episode 1, and Season 3’s episode 10. In ‘Revelations: Chapter Two,’ Dala’s attempt to escape the loop by using a faraway tree directly connects to the show’s pilot. Dala’s attempt went wrong when he teleported straight into a solid stone wall at the pool.
The smiling night monsters

From fans might have witnessed creatures looking like ordinary smiling people, killing random people at night after their catch. One of these creatures, Smiley, again appeared in the ‘Pas de Deux’ episode, and Boyd managed to kill it by transferring supernatural bloodworms into its body.
Pinkner opens up about the Man in Yellow
One of the creative choices Pinkner is most pleased with was bringing the Man in Yellow to the forefront of Season 4. He has pointed out that the character’s strength comes from the fact that he really enjoys suffering. Understanding how that dynamic was present in the show’s first hour would provide weight to the first-episode facts that could not have been carried on the first viewing.
