As CBS reports, a family of 6 was found dead on June 23, 2026, in an apartment on Harris Avenue in Mechanicville. Amy Steadman, her daughter, Sarah Myers, and Sarah’s four children were found dead after the police visited Steadman’s apartment to conduct a welfare check.
At first, the police couldn’t identify the victims or how they had died since the bodies had already begun to decompose. The case is currently being investigated as a homicide, and the evidence has tagged the grandmother, Amy Steadman, as the prime suspect.
Details of the Mechanicville murder case revealed by CBS
As CBS reports, the family’s neighbor had not seen them for two weeks and has thus alerted the police. When the police entered Amy Steadman’s apartment to conduct a welfare check on June 23, 2026, they found the family dead and their bodies decomposing. Due to the condition of the bodies, authorities could not initially identify everyone or their causes of death.
Besides Amy Steadman (64 years old) and Sarah Myers (44 years old), the other victims who were found dead were Sarah’s four children. They were 13-year-old Harper Harmon, 11-year-old Hudson Harmon, and 10-year-old twins Gavin and Gracelynn Harmon.
Sarah Myers and her children lived in a separate apartment in the same housing complex. Howrver, Sarah Myers and her children’s bodies were found in Sarah’s mother’s apartment and not their own, which investigators have found to be strange.
According to CBS’ WRGB, investigators have discovered a handwritten note, prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and other physical evidence from the apartment. All the evidence have reportedly suggested Amy Steadman to be the primary suspect. Authorities have also revealed that there is currently no evidence that suggests that anyone else had come in and killed the family.
All evidence thus points towards the case being a murder-suicide. However, authorities have not yet officially classified the case as a murder-suicide since the toxicology results and results of additional forensic examinations are yet to be revealed. These results will confirm how and why each victim diec.
According to CBS, early evidence suggests that most of the victims may have died from poisoning induced by medication. Authorities also revealed that there is proof of one of the children suffering a fatal sharp-force injury, which indicates that all the victims did not die in the same way.
Sarah was fighting a custody battle
According to what CBS has reported, investigators have discovered another aspect of the case that needs attention. Sarah was fighting a custody dispute with the father of her children, Brady Harmon for quite a few years.
Harmon has stated that he had not seen his children in person since 2019, and only communicated with them through occasional FaceTime calls. According to Harmon, a recent court agreement would have allowed the four children to spend the summer with him in Utah from July 1, 2026 to September 1, 2026.
Harmon also said he wasn’t able to communicate with Sarah and the rest of the family since early June, which forced him to request welfare checks. Authorities also believe that the family’s last known communication took place around June 10, 2026.
Following the news of the deaths, as CBS reports, Harmon suggested that the upcoming custody arrangement may have had something to do with their deaths. Police, however, have not confirmed any motive and are yet to connect the custody dispute to the deaths.
The case is still in its initial stages of investigation and is considered a homicide for now. Further investigation and toxicology reports will reveal more about the case in due time. As of now, Amy Steadman is being considered the prime suspect. Stay tuned for more information.
