Big Little Lies Season 3 gets its first major filming update after 3 year long wait

Fans have been eagerly waiting for Big Little Lies Season 3 ever since the show’s Season 2 finale. Season 2 ended with Celeste getting the custody of her twin sons, and with the cliffhanger of the Monterey Five going to the police station to confess what happened on the night of Perry Wright’s death.

Neither has there been any news of Big Little Lies Season 3 being in production for some time, nor of the show getting cancelled. Now, 7 years after the Season 2 finale, Big Little Lies Season 3 has finally received its first filming update, and we might be closer to figuring out if the Monterey Five ended up telling the police what really happened and what happened to them after.

Big Little Lies Season 3 might be closer than you think

Big Little Lies Season 2’s finale showed us Celeste representing herself in court, and winning the custody battle of her two sons against her mother-in-law, Marie Louise. A lot of the season’s conflicts like Reneta and Gordon’s divorce, Jane and Corey’s hesitation to take their relationship to the next stage, and Bonnie’s guilt, all come to a climax. But we don’t know if Bonnie or all the Monterey Five ended up going to prison or not. Big Little Lies Season 3 will have the chance to explain what happened next if it actually gets released.

Back in 2023, Nicole Kidman who plays Celeste in the show, and is also an executive producer on the show, spoke about the show during a Q&A at the CME Group Tour Championship saying,

“We will be bringing you a third one, just FYI.”

Now, three years later, David E. Kelley, creator and executive producer of the show has said that Big Little Lies Season 3 will go into production soon if everything falls into place. Speaking to the USA Today, Kelley said,

“It’s just starting to percolate, but it is going to happen. Excited about it. Again, an incredible cast, so an opportunity for good storytelling there, but it looks on track to start shooting in the fall.”

Reese Witherspoon, who plays Madeline, and also executive produces the show, also spoke to USA Today, saying,

“We’re just sort of in early talks. [We’re] communicating with Liane Moriarty, who has a lot of ideas about where these characters would be now. The children have grown up, they’re now teenagers, it’s been about 10 years… as you can imagine, parenting those age children has its set of challenges.”

Big Little Lies is based on Liane Moriarty’s book of the same name, and thus Moriarty must be one of the writers who decides where the story should be headed next. As Witherspoon pointed out, a lot of time has passed since Season 2, and the show’s story needs to reflect that change as well in Big Little Lies Season 3.

Thus, Season 3 is coming, and production will start soon in the fall if everything else goes well, but there isn’t a specific date for the beginning of production or a release window. We can expect the five leading women of the show, Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Zoë Kravitz, Laura Dern, and Shailene Woodley to reprise their roles as Madeline, Celeste, Bonnie, Reneta, and Jane, but not much can be said about the rest of the cast.

Big Little Lies Season 3 is expected to begin production in fall 2026. Seasons 1 and 2 are streaming on HBO Max.
