Armie Hammer had become one of the most popular actors of Hollywood after he started in Call Me by Your Name (2017) opposite Timothy Chalmet. After that, he had starred in Sorry to Bother You and Rebecca, among other projects, but they weren’t hits.
While his films weren’t exact doing great, he still had a career. However, in 2021, his career came to a complete standstill due to allegations of sexual assault by several women. Now, five years later, Armie Hammer has opened up about how he dealt with the scandal, how the last five years were, and where he is in life right now.
Armie Hammer addresses workless Hollywood years among other things
In 2021, several women had claimed that Armie Hammer had allegedly sexually abused them. There were also accusations of Hammer having cannibalistic fantasies which made headlines back in the day. In 2023, the investigation into the allegations came to an end and the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office did not press charges due to insufficient evidence.
Irrespective of whether those allegations were true, they forced Armie Hammer to step away from Hollywood entirely. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in 2026, Armie Hammer talked about how after due to the scandal, he had no work, and how he
“would have done a fu**ing cat food commercial. I just wanted to work again.”
Hammer lost all work prospects, his agents, and publicist after the scandal. Despite his paternal family being affluent, he did not inherit any substantial amount of money to stay afloat. He was struggling, and ended up living in a an apartment in Venice which was so small it could only fit a Murphy bed.
Hammer had spent time obsessissively thinking about what had happened, if it could be undone, and as The Hollywood Reporter reports, has come to the conclusion that
“That which you resist persists. That which you accept transforms,”
Hammer added,
“There was nothing I could say that was going to fix anything for me.”
Hammer struggled through the years of no work, sold timeshares and managed apartment complexes in the Cayman Islands, where his entire family had relocated to during the pandemic.
Hammer did find work again gradually. A year and a half after he returned to L.A. in 2024, the German director, Uwe Boll reached out to Hammer, expressing interest in casting him in his film. It was a surreal feeling for the actor, given that it had been years since someone had offered him a role. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Hammer said,
“I’m pretty sure I cried,”
He added,
“It was just this moment where I was like: I’m going to get to do the thing that I love more than anything — other than my children.”
He shot the film, which is called Citizen Vigilante. He then starred in Frontier Crucible, Night Driver, and Mascotland. Night Driver, and Mascotland are still in post production.
Addressing the scandals, Armie Hammer has refused to attack his ex-wife, noting that there’s no point in being bitter to the mother of his children just for the sake of being bitter. Hammer and his ex-wife are now no longer together, but are co-parents to their two children. Speaking about the scandal, Hammer did say,
“I made these problems for myself. This didn’t happen to me by a fluke accident. I didn’t do what people are saying I did. But I brought very dangerous and unsafe people into my life, and I pissed off people in my life — and here we are.”
Armie Hammer is now back to acting. It is yet to be known if Hollywood would actually take him back, or whether he’d have to settle for moderately successful films which aren’t blockbuster. However, the actor is at peace. He lives a happy life by himself in West Hollywood, and is gradually getting used to being an actor again. He is the host of Armie HammerTime Podcast. Hammer’s daily routine is disciplined and his life revolves around his children.
