Alicent Hightower probably doesn’t want to play the Game of Thrones anymore

House of the Dragon Season 3 will take us to that part of the story which reminds us of the fact that the show is a Game of Thrones prequel. We’ll get to see the main events of the Dance of the Dragons, which will begin with the Battle of Gullet.

As the Blacks and the Greens are gearing up for war along with their dragons, it seems that Alicent Hightower probably doesn’t want to play the Game of Thrones anymore.

House of the Dragon Season 3 Preview and Olivia Cooke’s statement suggests that Alicent doesn’t want war anymore

Towards the end of Season 2, when Alicent Hightower realized the true meaning of Viserys’ last words, we saw her regretting all her actions. At the end of the season, Alicent secretly travelled to Dragonstone to make a deal with Rhaenyra in the hopes of preventing a full-blown war and bloodshed.

When she realized that Rhaenyra isn’t going to take a step back now, and that a war is bound to happen, Alicent agreed to hand over King’s Landing to her. She also told Rhaenyra that she would need to execute Aegon II to get the Iron Throne. As the House of the Dragon Season 3 Preview shows, upon her return to King’s Landing, Alicent will be questioned by the regnant king Aegon II regarding where she went.

Moreover, seasons before House of the Dragon Season 3 have highlighted how the men in Alicent’s life have always decided things without her approval and ignored her counsel. Now that she knows how wrong she was, and what her mistake has led to, Alicent doesn’t want bloodshed. She is willingly going to give up King’s Landing and most likely try to flee the city with Haelena.

As Olivia Cooke, who plays Alicent Hightower, said in an interview with CBSMornings,

“I think Allison wants peace, and l also think she has no other choice and she’s come to this realization that she has been used by every single man in her life. So, I think that’s why she sort of like turns to Rhaenyra and she’s like, that’s the person that knew me when l didn’t have all these things attached to me and I didn’t have all this armor and all the walls.”

While she cannot support Rhaenyra directly in public, Alicent has come to realize that her son’s claim to the throne is based on misinterpretation. Now, all she wants is peace. But since she cannot have peace, she doesn’t want to play any more games to ensure her son sits on the Iron Throne.

Alicent will perhaps see Rhaenyra as the friend she once had once again and understand where she’s coming from. While she cannot save everyone from Rhaenyra and her army, she will most likely try to save her daughter. Alas, it is indeed too late, and much blood will be spilt in the upcoming war until Rhaenyra wins.

House of the Dragon Season 3 will premiere on HBO June 21, 2026. The season will have eight episodes, which will be released weekly till August 9, 2026.
