Worst Neighbor Ever Episode 1 documents the real-life story of Frances Zaayer and a feud gone too far

Netflix’s Worst Neighbor Ever recently premiered for fans of Worst Roommate Ever. The original series returns with a focus on ordinary neighbors through this spin-off. The new story explores four cases where small disputes within friendly communities grow into harrassment, threats, and sometimes deadly attacks.

Season 1 utilizes direct accounts from residents, interviews with police, and real body-cam footage to show how these conflicts unfold. The Worst Ex Ever director and executive producer, Cynthia Childs, directed the new show, with Obsession’s producer Jason Blum as the executive producer.

Episode 1 presents the real-life story of a woman named France Zaayer and her constant harrassment of her neighbors that ended in murder. Zaayer was once close to Shawna, and they turned over a new leaf after both settled on the same street.

During the renovation of her house, Frances stayed with Shawna, but their living arrangement soon created strain. When Frances finally moved into her home, the situation worsened. They now lived directly across from each other.

Worst Neighbor Ever Episode 1: Frances Zaayer’s friendship ends in the murder of Shawna Scott

Finding a new series that keeps audiences hooked is always exciting. Worst Neighbor Ever had done exactly that, with viewers staying up late to finish episodes. Many admitted they simply could not stop once they started. The series stood out, with many praising it and urging others to try it confidently without any disappointment.

Episode 1 shows Shawna Scott and her husband, David, moving to Kentucky to be near Shawna’s family. One day, they meet an old family acquaintance, Frances Zaayer, who has just bought a house there. Frances was an adopted member of Shawna’s family. They had not been in touch for many years since their formative years. While her house was being prepared, Frances decided to live with Shawna and her family. But things soon took a turn. In this episode, Shawna says:

“Frances decided that she was going to try to cause problems.”

At first, the reunion feels like a pleasant return to a teenage friendship. But the mood of the episode shifts when Zaayer begins showing strange and controlling behavior. Over time, Shawna says those actions grow into racially motivated violence, deeply damaging her family.

Police were often called to their neighborhood because of the conflicts ranging from boundary arguments to physical fights. In one case, Shawna dialed 911 after seeing Frances without a top in her garden, while Zaayer later contacted the police claiming she was being filmed every time she stepped outside.

In May 2018, CCTV footage was found that revealed Zaayer crossing the street to another address. There, she pulled out a gun and shot Shawna and the deputy jailer David, leaving Shawna injured and killing David. Then Shawna was rushed to the hospital with severe injuries to her face.

Worst Neighbor Ever episode 2 shows flashbacks of Frances’ past life before she started living with Shawna. The episode Midwest Meltdown shows how the conflict began after Frances went through a divorce and temporarily stayed with the Scotts as a guest in their home. Her unpredictable behavior soon creates tensions, and the Scotts ask her to leave.

However, Frances lives in the house directly across the street. From there, she starts a long campaign of harrassment and legal actions against the family. This ongoing hostility eventually leads to a tragic act of violence.
