Why is Marty Supreme tagged as a “boring movie” with good acting? Timothée Chalamet fans criticize as A24 drama gets HBO streaming

Timothée Chalamet’s 2025 Oscar snub Marty Supreme is finally available to stream on HBO Max. The Josh Safdie-created sports comedy-drama film, which premiered at the New York Film Festival in October 2025 before releasing in the US theatres on Christmas 2025 became A24’s highest-grossing film.

Marty Supreme stars Timothée Chalamet as Marty Mauser (loosely based on American table tennis player Marty Reisman), a fast-talking, ambitious and aspiring table tennis player who dreams of becoming a world champion at the upcoming global ping-pong championship in Tokyo. The film is a series of Marty’s (often comical) efforts and fierce determination as he sets out to secure funding to fulfill his lifelong dream despite odds and the doubts of those surrounding him. The movie’s additional cast also features impressive performances by Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, Abel Ferrara, Fran Drescher and Tyler Okonma.

In addition to positive reviews from critics & fans alike, Timothée Chalamet’s portrayal of a charming yet extremely ambitious sportsman in Marty Supreme won him a Golden Globe and a Critics’ Choice Award for Best Actor. The movie was pitted as a big Oscar winner but failed to secure a single win from its nine nominations, much to Chalamet’s fans’ disappointment.

With Marty Supreme now streaming on HBO Max, a fresh wave of viewers is diving into the film, though reactions remain divided, with many pointing to its underwhelming script as a major drawback. A Reddit user had a rather strong stance on A24’s highest-grossing film:

”The acting was good. Just thought the movie was kinda boring. But it wasn’t really good or that bad.”

Marty Supreme fan reactions

Fan reactions to Marty Supreme’s streaming debut seem to echo critics’ sentiments, with many hailing it as a defining moment in Timothée Chalamet’s career. While the Dune actor sparked major controversy with his comments during a CNN and Variety town hall, suggesting opera and ballet are irrelevant now, Chalamet’s loyal fans continue to support him and his acting in the film.

Many Reddit users felt that while Timothée Chalamet justified his Marty Supreme role, the script and writing in general were lacking:

”These are the types of roles I like Chalamet in the most: unlikable little freak bastards and he did a great job in this role.”

”Chalamet wasn’t the problem with this film, he was excellent – the issue was its script was vapid, dull, lacked proper arcs for characters, and the message felt infantile. I think the other Safdie bro movies are 10/10’s but this one really distanced itself from that quality.” wrote another Reddit user

While many fans were critical of Timothée Chalamet’s character, calling him a ‘douche,’ toxic, unaware of his surroundings, overtly ambitious and disrespectful towards human emotions, another section of fans felt that’s how the character was envisioned. However, they agreed that the movie’s pacing and script failed to redeem Marty, resulting in a disastrous character arc that translated into (unjustified) hate for the actor.

A Reddit user summarized this general fan response to Marty Supreme:

”Chalamet was very good but the part was written for him to just keep driving and not show much variation. This is more the writers’ fault than the actors. He had to keep up that nasty energy for most of the film. He was equal to the task and held the screen, and deserved his nomination. But I think we’ll see better ones from him in future.”

The user continued to express their hatred for the film’s script, calling the editing and writing awful:

”I was struck by how *bad* the script was…Nothing about that plot was remotely believable, even in the context of this larger-than-life story. No one behaved like a real human being, it was action and propulsion for the sake of editing and tension. Awful.”

As fans continue to criticize Marty Supreme for its boring script, dull writing and awful editing, Timothée Chalamet’s acting continues to gain praise, just in time for his upcoming Dune 3, the final chapter of Denis Villeneuve’s epic space opera trilogy, scheduled to arrive in theatres on December 18.

Marty Supreme is streaming on HBO Max.
