The beloved MMORPG franchise is returning with a prequel set in the world of Tyria, coming to PCs.
ArenaNet officially announced Guild Wars 3 at Summer Game Fest 2026, ending more than 14 years without a new numbered entry in the franchise. The game will release on PC, Steam, and PlayStation 5, marking the first time any Guild Wars title has appeared on home consoles. A beta test is scheduled for fall 2027, with the full release date and pricing to be confirmed later.
The announcement follows a series of teaser images and cryptic communications from the studio that had been building anticipation among the franchise’s dedicated community. ArenaNet is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Korean gaming company NCSoft, and the studio’s last major release was Guild Wars 2 in 2012. Guild Wars Reforged, a modernized version of the original 2005 game, launched in 2025 and expanded to mobile devices in 2026.
What the game is and where it is set
Guild Wars 3 is a prequel, set in the land of Orr within the series’ established world of Tyria, taking place more than a thousand years before the events of the original game. The setting places players during the Guild Wars era, a period in the franchise’s lore when human kingdoms and guild factions clashed over resources and territory. That historical conflict, previously referenced in the series’ background mythology, now serves as the central backdrop for the new game.
Players take on the role of a Vaelwarden, a member of a guild of adventurers dedicated to protecting the spirits of the wild and the land of Orr itself. The world is populated by nature entities called Vael spirits, which embody the vitality of the landscape and vary in size and influence across different ecosystems. The most prominent of these spirits is the Seeker, which serves as both a companion and a mount for players exploring the open world.
The game is being developed using Unreal Engine 5 and is designed around large-scale open world exploration, dynamic combat, and a world that shifts based on collective player activity. Guild-focused cooperative content, large-scale player-versus-player conflicts, and a world event system will carry forward the franchise’s signature emphasis on community-driven play.
What makes this entry different
One of the more significant design commitments ArenaNet has highlighted is a combat system built from the ground up to work equally well on a controller and on a keyboard and mouse. The system rewards movement and positioning, emphasizing momentum as a tool players can convert into combat effectiveness as they shift between different movement modes.
The studio has also described an intent to modernize the broader MMORPG experience rather than simply update the Guild Wars formula. The franchise has historically operated without a subscription fee, a model that helped it attract more than 29 million players across its history. Whether Guild Wars 3 will continue that approach has not yet been confirmed, with pricing details reserved for a later announcement.
The franchise’s history and what comes next
Guild Wars, which launched in 2005, earned a reputation for its combination of fast-paced action combat, large-scale dynamic events, and player-versus-player content, alongside one of the most consistently praised community cultures in the genre. Guild Wars 2, released in 2012, earned significant critical recognition including a Game of the Year designation from Time Magazine that year. The series has maintained an active player base through expansions and updates across its 14-year run.
Guild Wars 3 represents the studio’s first ground-up new entry in the franchise since then. The announcement at Summer Game Fest placed it alongside some of the weekend’s biggest reveals, and the addition of PlayStation 5 support signals an ambition to reach an audience significantly broader than the PC-only player base the franchise has historically served.
Additional details on gameplay systems, pricing, beta access, and release timing are expected to be revealed progressively through the remainder of 2026 and into 2027. The game can currently be wishlisted on Steam and the PlayStation Store.
