Sean Murray has been carrying NCIS for over two decades as Timothy McGee and twenty three seasons later, something in the air suggests he may not be around anymore. He first appeared in season 1 as the nervous junior agent who everyone named Probie and as the senior active member of the Major Case Response team now, we can confidently say that no one in the show has logged more episodes. With a longevity like that, he is crucial to the show. So is he actually leaving? Here’s what we know.
The speculations first came i Season 22, when McGee pushed hard for a promotion to NCIS Deputy Director. It made total sense for the character: 20-plus years in the field, MIT-trained, unshakeable under pressure. His wife Delilah wanted him off the ground-level work but McGee himself wanted more. The job went to Gabriel LaRoche instead and just like that, the most qualified person in the room walked away with nothing.
Why fans think Sean Murray is leaving NCIS
Season 23 then dropped a pair of moments that made these speculations even more clear. In the second episode, McGee shows up at an off-grid shack where Parker is hiding and reveals MooseNet, a personal communications system he built that is running on solar power and satellite internet, with a patent already pending. But what it meant was something different: This man has a viable second career sitting right there in his hands. Then cme episode 6, titled Page-Turner, where McGee gets kidnapped, handles the entire case essentially solo, hacks evidence, negotiates with his captor, and arrests the suspect before backup arrives. It clearly pointed to one thing: he has outgrown his role.
Then the Season 23 finale brought in another significant detail as it introduced Mateo, McGee’s son from a relationship nearly two decades prior. Fans pointed out that this could be a classic passing the torch moment. Mateo might inherit his father’s position on the show and Sean Murray might be here only for a short while.
As of now, there’s no official confirmation from Murray or CBS but fan theories have been all over the place on whether Timothy McGee, the man at the centre will be here for much longer or not. As someone who has spent more than two decades building the show, his exit will matter and will affect the show’s premise overall.
For now, all we can do is wait, and see where NCIS leaves Sean Murray.
