Alex Bueno, a renowned Latin musician has passed away in New York City on June 18.

The 62 year old singer had been battling brain cancer since last September. He reportedly underwent surgery last year to remove a small brain tumor that month which initially showed positive progress. However, the tumor contained cancerous cells that led to metastasis. His condition deteriorated in the final weeks while he was in intensive care.

In a career which spanned more than four decades Alex specialized in Merengue and Bachata music. He mastered genres including Salsa, Bolero and romantic ballads.

The late Dominican music icon was married to Sarah Arias. They had been together since 2013 until his death. She was a vital part of his life and Bueno had often credited her for helping him overcome his battle with addiction and achieving sobriety a year after their marriage. He fathered six children and shared them with different partners.

Alex Bueno was born on September 1963 to parents Santiago Bueno and Francisca López. He was raised in San José de las Matas, province of Santiago in Dominican Republic. His real name was Alejandro Wigberto Bueno López.

He grew up in a musically rich environment. His father had expertise in playing the guitar and the violin. While his mother and grandmother sang and played guitar. He had a brother named Felipe Bueno who was also a singer.

Alex developed a passion for music at an early age singing at local churches, school events and family gatherings. He moved from San José de las Matas to Santo Domingo to pursue music opportunities. His professional breakthrough came in 1978 when he won first place in the Dominican Republic’s Festival De La Voz vocal competition.

Alex Bueno gained fame in the late 1970s and 1980s after becoming a member of Orquesta Liberación and Gerardo Vera’s All Stars. He embarked on a solo career in the 1990s and produced hit tracks like El Jardín Prohibido, Colegiala and Qué Vuelva.

Alex shared two daughters who were named Barney and Rachel when he was with his first wife Myrna Demauro. Later in his life, Alex reportedly dated a woman named Adalgisa with whom he shared a son named Gilbert Alejandro.

At the time of his death, Alex Bueno was married to his wife, Sarah Arias, a singer. Alex had frequently described Sarah as his eterna compañera (eternal companion) and credited her unwavering support with helping him achieve and maintain sobriety since 2014. In his early teens, Alex faced struggles with substance and alcohol abuse.

The couple had a daughter named Rosaliz. Throughout his life, he remained a dedicated husband and a father to his six children.

Alex Bueno shared a positive message in January to his fans on Instagram where he expressed hope for a speedy recovery. The post featured his recent image with his wife, Sarah along with a caption which on translation read:

“Dear friends, as it’s been a while since I haven’t shared any recent images with you, here I share this photo from this morning, together with “my eternal companion”, Sarah, to tell you that everything is going super well as my recovery is concerned.”

He concluded:

“God willing we will meet again on the stages very soon.. VERY SOON!”

Alex had his last interview with journalist and TV personality, Tony Dandrades. The translated title of the interview read Alex Bueno’s Last Interview: Confessions That Take on New Meaning Today. During the interview, Alex reflected on his artistic journey and early career. Clips from the interview have been circulated on social media.

Alex Bueno’s final music releases included the single En Qué Fallé, where he collaborated with merenguero Gabby Arias. The song was released on June 6. Last March, he released his latest album El más completo featuring merengue, salsa, bolero, bachata and other musical rhythms.
