48 Hours: Who is Mark Lewis and what happened to his wife?

48 Hours revealed that Mark was a resident of Solano County in California, who became pastor of Vacaville’s Fellowship Baptist Church after his father. He met Joanna when they were children in school. They started dating each other and later married in 2000. But their relationship took a turn when Mark started domestic violence against his wife.

Her mother said that their family was excluded from the wedding and also claimed that her daughter started to live in an isolated mode after filing several petitions against her husband. The prosecutors charged him with domestic violence and sentenced him to prison in November 1996. Joanna visited him in jail, and Lewis told her that he was born again. Later, she asked the court to dismiss one of the restraining orders and release his husband.

Former church member accused Mark of abuse and control. Some said that they saw his wife suffer under his behavior. On October 6, 2011, a church member dialed the emergency service and told dispatchers that Joanna was found dead in her bedroom. She was discovered unconscious by Mark. The police arrived at the spot and saw her body hanging in a closet with a note lying beside her body. The investigators ruled her death a suicide.

48 Hours: Mark’s current status

48 Hours revealed that Mark is currently living a private life after serving his prison time. He was released in 2023, but the exact release date wasn’t made public. Since then, he has stayed out of the public eye.

The episode showed that Lewis relocated to Arizona and started working for a plumbing and drain cleaning company. He allegedly targeted his girlfriend, Sarah Nottingham, after their breakup and stalked her. He hired people to attack her home with firebombs.
