McDonald, 65, is winding down with him set to retire after the World Championships in January.

He has been an MC on the second stage of the UK Open and at the Women’s World Matchplay.

Jones, who hails from Portsmouth, previously worked as a financial adviser.

He is likely to be in the running to replace McDonald once he hangs up his microphone next year.

The veteran MC wished Jones well ahead of the Grand Slam, tweeting: “Wishing my little mate all the best today as he looks after the afternoon at the Grand Slam. Good luck Lew.”

Who is darts MC legend John McDonald?

McDonald has worked with the PDC for 18 years and succeeded Phil Jones as the main man in 2007.

A former member of the Parachute Regiment and a news photographer, he began his career as a sports MC in boxing.

He has also covered snooker and pool amongst a wide range of sports over the last 30 years.

On retirement, Londoner McDonald said: “I’ve spent two decades now working with the PDC and loved every moment, but the time is right for me to hang up my microphone.

“The World Darts Championship final will be the perfect place for me to end, as we celebrate the culmination of the biggest-ever event in the sport.

“I’m so proud to have been a part of the PDC’s journey during my time as Master of Ceremonies, and I’ll look forward to my remaining events on stage.”
