What’s the future of The Handmaid’s Tale spinoff The Testaments? Creator gives the answer

If you’re already hooked to Hulu’s newest dystopian drama The Testaments, then we have some good news for you. The show’s creator has shared his extensive plans for the show’s future and from what we can read, we’ll get to see more of Gilead soon.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, creator Bruce Miller revealed he envisions the spinoff running for 30 to 50 episodes total, which works out to roughly three to five seasons. His reasoning is pretty practical: he never wants to be caught off guard by success. “If you hit some crazy home run in success, you don’t want to say, ‘I’m screwed. I don’t have stuff,'” he said.

However, the approach to The Testaments is a little different from how he handled the original series. With The Handmaid’s Tale, Miller knew exactly how it would end from the very moment he pitched it to Hulu back in the beginning, and that vision eventually played out across six seasons. With The Testaments, he has a sense of where he wants the story to land but doesn’t yet have that specific final scene locked in his head.

Speaking to the outlet, Miller states,

“I think just out of trying to end it in a satisfying way in the business environment that we exist in, I think of about 30 to 50 episodes. So three to five seasons. And then, if we are lucky enough to get that, or we’re lucky enough to get season 2 even, all of that will be wonderful. But I want to make sure I’m not writing myself into a corner.”

More details about The Testaments

The Hulu spinoff made it;s debut on April 8, 2026, and is based on Margaret Atwood’s 2019 novel of the same name. The show goes on four years after the War of Massachusetts, and is about a new generation of young women navigating life inside Gilead. However, thistime, the show takes a more coming-of-age approach to the narrative.

The two central characters are Agnes, played by Chase Infiniti who is a dutiful, pious girl at the top of the social hierarchy at Aunt Lydia’s elite preparatory school, and is groomed to become a Commander’s wife. On the other hand there is Daisy, played by Lucy Halliday who is a Canadian teenager whose entire world falls apart when she discovers a horrifying family secret connecting her directly to Gilead. Turns out she was smuggled out as a child, and now she’s back, working undercover as a Mayday operative. The collision of these two storylines is what the whole show is built around.

The show has already earned an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising its fresh cast and slow-burning tension. With future seasons confirmed, it would certainly be interesting to see what’s more is to be revealed about Gilead.
