On January 10, actress Thora Birch and her husband, Michael Benton Adler, got involved in a confrontation with an unidentified man while leaving the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, after attending the BAFTA Tea Party.
In her personal life, Birch, 43, maintains a low profile. However, she has been busy professionally and recently appeared in Kristen Stewart’s 2025 feature film directorial debut, The Chronology of Water.
According to TMZ’s reports on the latest altercation, the individual asked for Birch’s autograph on the photos he took of her. However, Adler claimed the male fan had been following them throughout the weekend and had reportedly “threatened” him.
The now-viral moment was captured by several witnesses. Thora was seen screaming at the man and saying:
“I’ll f**king knock you out.”
As her talent manager-producer husband proceeded to pull her away from the situation and walk away, the man kept following them and threatened with “You’re on video.” While Thora Birch said she didn’t care, Michael appeared to lose his calm, warned the man of consequences, grabbed the photos, and tore them into pieces.
Subsequently, the alleged stalker hurled a series of insults towards Adler and accused him of hitting him, to which Thora Birch responded:
“Are you out of your mind? Did you just call him trash? Are you from f**king Israel?”
The man, in turn, responded by saying he is from Puerto Rico and then demanded “thirty bucks” for his damaged photos.
As the couple proceeded to walk away and asked bystanders for help, the man kept following them. A second video captured Thora Birch saying that she’s a “nice person,” but the man went “out of line.” However, she stopped to sign her headshots, handed them over to the guy, and said:
“Take it as compensation and don’t be a d**k.”
Meanwhile, Adler warned the man to “stay the f**k away” and told video recorders how he and his wife were being accosted.
“Do you see this crazy guy? This guy threatened me. Can we get this guy out of here? Please get rid of this guy… For all you people out there, don’t listen to this stuff. These people are wrong. They’re bad people. All we were trying to do was walk out.”
Exploring Thora Birch’s career from then to now
Last year in May, Thora Birch appeared at the Cannes International Film Festival to attend the global premiere of her biographical psychological drama film, The Chronology of Water, adapted from the 2011 novel of the same name by Lidia Yuknavitch.
Apart from the feature film, Birch also appeared in the 2025 supernatural horror thriller television series Mayfair Witches, also starring Alexandra Daddario, Tongayi Chirisa, and Harry Hamlin, among others.
She also briefly appeared in the 2024 movie, The Midway Point, after a short career hiatus.
For those unaware, Thora Birch made her screen debut as a four-year-old on a Quaker Oats commercial, followed by the 1988 sci-fi comedy, Purple People Eater, which earned her a Young Artist Award.
As a child actress, Birch went on to appear in movies such as Paradise, Patriot Games, Hocus Pocus, Clear and Present Danger, Monkey Trouble, Now and Then, and Alaska. However, her breakthrough role came as Jane Burnham in the 1999 Oscar-winning film American Beauty, for which she received a BAFTA nomination and won the Screen Actors Guild Award.
Thora Birch was born to adult film stars, Carol Connors and Jack Birch, who was also her manager.
As an adult, Birch continued to work in films such as Dungeons & Dragons and Ghost World. However, her career slowly began to see a downward trajectory with low-budget horror films and TV movies such as Homeless to Harvard: The Liz Murray Story.
In part, her acting career had begun tanking because of her father-manager Jack Birch’s ill-fame. As it happened, Thora Birch was part of an off-Broadway production of Dracula in 2010.
However, her dad threatened one of her male co-stars, which led to her removal from the cast. As director, Paul Alexander, later explained to ABC News:
“I had to let her go for the safety of my cast and crew. It’s unfortunate because Thora’s performance would have been an extremely interesting and innovative performance to watch — that’s why I hired her in the first place.”
However, Jack Birch denied ever making a “threat” to any of his daughter’s colleagues, but claimed to have simply conveyed Thora’s “discomfort” while speaking with the New York Times at the time.
As for Thora Birch, she was “blindsided” by the firing and added:
“I’m totally in a state of shock over this. I still can’t believe it. My dad is my support, and he is the best support that I could ever have,” she added.
According to the New York Post, a similar incident also occurred on the sets of the 2007 film, The Winter of Frozen Dreams, during which Jack Birch reportedly threatened to pull his daughter, warned the assistant directors, and insisted on watching the filming of an intimate scene involving Thora Birch and Dean Winters.
During her acting hiatus, Thora Birch spoke to The Guardian in 2014.
“I decided to take a break and live my life, branch out a little, educate myself… It makes me angry when you use that phrase [step-back] because I didn’t step back. I was always working, it’s just that no one was paying attention,” she said at the time.
Birch also cited her “mouthy” nature and unwillingness to “shut up” and accept the conventional beauty standards of Hollywood as the reason for her brief disappearance.
“I just felt like I was making people angry, because I wouldn’t wear the frilly bows. I just didn’t take advice, and I think people got p*ssed off at me for not taking advice,” she stated.
Birch added:
“I p*ssed a lot of people off over a long period of time, and they found a way to upset me, hoping that the upset would bring a change in my behavior. Like a distancing… But I’m done, I’m done. People wanted me to be not fine. A lot of it was bullsh*t.”
Apart from various appearances on podcasts and music videos, her most notable and long stint was on nine episodes of season 10 of The Walking Dead. She also starred in her directorial debut, The Gabby Petito Story, in 2022 under the banner of Lifetime Original.

Despite appearing in the original movie, Thora Birch missed her chance of starring in Hocus Pocus 2 in 2022. At the time, she cited a schedule conflict during her interview with Entertainment Tonight.
“There were three options we had for how to bring Dani back, all of which I was excited by. By the time they got around to filming, I was already on something else,” Birch claimed.
Last year in January, she spoke to People Magazine about the future of her career.
“I try not to say, ‘Oh, I just want to do this type of movie, or that type of movie,’ because it’s fun to play in all the different spaces.’ I try not to make a big plan. For a lot of people, that works, but for me, in my experience, I’ve found that it’s better not to try to manifest too deeply, because you still have to be open to the new surprises that the universe will introduce to you.”
Now, in the wake of the Beverly Hills altercation drama, Birch and her husband have released a statement via TMZ.
“We are deeply regretful of its escalation. As we left an event, my wife, Thora, was accosted by a professional autograph seeker who followed us to our car from a private area. Thora was trying to de-escalate the situation,” Adler claimed.
He also defended her comment and stated that due to her Jewish background and close family ties to Israel, she was “simply trying to place an accent.” However, the couple has “deeply apologized” for the misunderstanding.
