Nemesis is the latest crime thriller on Netflix, and it has arrived with a gritty psychological edge, explosive action, and a layered exploration of morality, loyalty, and survival. Co-created by Courtney A. Kemp and Tani Marole, it’s the first series born from a new creative partnership between Kemp and Netflix. Eight episodes, two men, one city. And absolutely no clean answers about who the hero actually is.
Nemesis is about two people chasing each other, who are slowly becoming obsessed with each other. It follows a master thief Coltrane Wilder and a LAPD detective Isaiah Stiles. But it gets more complex than just that. The show explores how their pursuit of each other slowly engulfs them and becomes toxic.
Y’Lan Noel, who plays Wilder talked about the characters and stated,
“They’re the guys that stay up late and do all the preparation. They’re part of the 1% who are willing to put in the work and are incessant about being better than they were the next day.”
The element that separates the show from others of it’s genre is how it blurs the lines between it’s hero and villain. Wilder, even though he’s a criminal is shown to be protective and a provider for his family. Co-creator Tani Marole put it simply as she stated,
“We’re used to the white shining knight and the black cat. What if the black cat’s actually this great human being, and he just happens to do crime for a living? And what if the shining knight has some real anger issues, might need therapy, but he’s the hero? They both have moral compasses. It’s just about which side of the coin they’re on.”

The creators came in with very conventional crime drama ideas and then explained how they’d flip them. You fall in love with the criminal. You’re dealing not with infidelity, but with a faithful marriage and that’s a genuinely interesting inversion. Most crime shows reward you for loving the chaos but Nemesis seems intent on making you uncomfortable about it instead.
The cast also includes Cleopatra Coleman, Tre Hale, Domenick Lombardozzi, Jonnie Park, Ariana Guerra, Gabrielle Dennis, and Michael Potts, with Shane Johnson, Stephanie Sigman, Quincy Isaiah, Jay Reeves, and others in recurring roles.
All in all, it’s a show worth watching, and with an ensemble this stunning, it should definitely be on everyone’s watchlists.
