What happened to Tristan Thompson’s brother Amari? Former NBA star seeks conservatorship in new court filing

Cleveland Cavaliers power forward Tristan Thompson is taking significant measures to protect his younger brother Amari Thompson’s health and well-being. According to Entertainment Now, as cited by Page Six, the 35-year-old NBA champion Tristan Thompson has recently filed for conservatorship over his 19-year-old brother, Amari.

While Tristan Thompson has always been like a guardian figure to Amari, this is a major responsibility he is taking to make sure his brother is properly taken care of. According to Entertainment Now, Tristan’s brother Amari suffers from a serious type of epilepsy, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS), that causes seizures. LGS can also be the reason for developmental delays and can lead to other severe disabilities.

The primary reason behind seeking conservatorship for Amari, as stated by Tristan in the court filing, is that he cannot take care of his personal needs, which include food, shelter, clothing, and his physical health as well. As mentioned in the court filing, Amari also deals with intellectual disability, which stops him from managing his financial resources and makes him vulnerable when it comes to fraud.

As cited by Entertainment Now, while Amari has no objection regarding the conservatorship, as per the court documents, due to his health condition, he is unable to make a meaningful decision regarding the choice of conservator. The filing also stated that Tristan Thompson’s younger brother is unable to continue his life independently, as he has to rely on his elder brother for day-to-day care.

Tristan Thompson, who was in a relationship with Khloe Kardashian and shares two children with her, became Amari’s legal guardian after their mother, Andrea, died from a heart attack in 2023.

While their father, Trevor Thompson, was also not there to take care of Amari since 2014, it was Tristan who stepped up and took his younger brother’s responsibility and cared for him. During a conversation with People about Amari’s health condition, Tristan said:

“Amari is fully disabled, so he doesn’t talk or walk on his own, so everything is assisted.”

While mentioning Amari’s two full-time caregivers, Tristan called them:

“A blessing and angels in disguise.”

Interestingly, as cited by Entertainment Tonight, Tristan’s former partner, Khloe Kardashian, has also previously been Amari’s guardian. During a July 2025 episode of the Khloe in Wonder Land podcast, she revealed that she was Amari’s primary caregiver, as Tristan at the time was occupied and busy with his basketball matches. During the podcast, regarding Amari, Khloe also said:

“We just want to provide Amari with the best, most beautiful life that we know how. And he deserves that.”
