When it comes to some of the most unpredictable characters in The Rookie Season 8, Monica Stevens will surely cross many minds. She is known for keeping viewers guessing about whether she’s actually a hero or villain.
It’s been obvious since the beginning that Monica is a very clever woman who can use the system to her advantage. After all, she is an attorney who is incredibly talented at pushing the limits of what is legal while never really taking the time to think about what might happen if it doesn’t work out.
In The Rookie Season 8, Monica is no longer just playing both sides. She is completely immersed in a world where every move comes with serious risk. Episode 17, “Dead Ringer,” becomes the point where everything finally catches up to her.

The Rookie Season 8: How Monica’s past choices set up her downfall
In The Rookie Season 8, fans were intrigued by Monica’s character. This season’s allure toward Monica will not only focus on her mannerisms but also on her transition from a law-abiding defense attorney to a criminal who operates outside the bounds of the law.
All throughout the first seven seasons, Monica was motivated by her own personal gain, while also challenging and pushing the limits set forth by others. Initially, Monica was the attorney for Elijah Stone. However, as the series progressed, Monica’s decisions have led her down a much darker road than her initial trajectory.
By Season seven’s conclusion, Monica had secured her immunity by acquiring stolen sensitive information. Thus, both the FBI and LAPD were forced to protect Monica in lieu of apprehending her.
In Season Eight, Monica continues to work in collaboration with the FBI and LAPD to capture criminals such as arms dealers and the people involved in the illegal drug trade. That said, there is no real shift in Monica’s character.
She continues to use both agencies to her benefit, while also continuing to manipulate any circumstance that allows her to maintain her dominance in the criminal universe.
At the same time, Monica’s position becomes weaker, especially after spending time on the run. She no longer has the resources she used to have and even her relationships with law enforcement remain tense, especially with Agent Garza.
Then, everything comes to a head in Episode 17 of The Rookie Season 8 when Monica tries to secure one last escape plan through a contact named Aiden. To make it happen, she has to betray Cooper Johnson, a dangerous arms dealer. But when the federal agents wipe out her leverage, she’s left exposed, with no backup plan and no time to recover.
The Rookie Season 8: Monica’s final moments and what her death means for the show
Before her final escape in The Rookie Season 8, Monica chooses to meet Wesley one last time, and it becomes one of her most honest moments in the series. She no longer pretends in front of Wesley and admits that she either wishes to escape completely or die by the end of the night.
Wesley listens to Monica and tries to explain to her that she can still change for good. But Monica doesn’t believe that’s possible anymore. She’s certain she has crossed too many lines, and there’s no going back.
The goodbye moment feels really heavy as they both acknowledge the person Monica used to be. After leaving, Monica gets into what she thinks is her ride to the airport, expecting it to take her to safety.
Instead of taking Monica to the airport, the driver changes the route. And that’s when we realize that something bad is about to happen. Monica herself stays calm as she also knows she won’t make it out alive this time. And a few moments after, she is killed.
So in Season 8, Monica’s story finally comes to an end. The show does not keep it hidden and confirms that Monica Stevens is no more.
