Katie Rogers, the terminally sick patient who grew a strong bond with Dr. Lucas, passed away due to multiple organ failure.
Introduced in Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 Episode 3, Katie was initially diagnosed with stage II gastric cancer. However, as Bailey ran further tests, it was found that her cancer had spread to Stage IV. Katie had few friends who would understand her condition, and so she did not have many visitors at the hospital. Dr. Lucas gradually developed a soft corner for Katie. Katie was then put on immunotherapy, and Lucas helped her throughout.
Soon, they began exchanging memes and movie recommendations. Bailey told her that the treatment was working and her tumor had reduced by around 30 percent. She began planning for her New York trip. However, her dreams were shattered when she found out that the funding for her clinical trial had been stopped.
Katie’s health deteriorated further, and she had to be admitted to the hospital. Bailey tried to remove the extra fluid from her abdomen, but she wasn’t responding well to the treatment. Soon, her liver stopped responding, and she had multiple organ failure. Katie was adamant about returning to her home. She didn’t want to remain at the hospital. She couldn’t believe initially that she had only a few days to live. Bailey told her that if she left the hospital premises, she wouldn’t get the insurance money, but Katie remained firm in her decision.
Finally, Lucas made a plan to bring her to Meredith’s house. Bailey was left heartbroken when the clinical trial was called off. She vented it to Lucas and revealed that fifteen years ago, she couldn’t save Katie’s grandmother, who died of gastric cancer, and now Katie was put on a clinical trial and was recovering, but the government stripped the funding and Katie’s last hope to live.

After Katie was shifted from the hospital to Meredith’s house, her condition didn’t improve much, yet Lucas tried his best. He took care of her. He didn’t leave her side for once.
With Simone’s help, Lucas was able to send Katie’s mother away. It seemed like Lucas wanted to spend all his time with Katie, who was clearly dying, but he stopped going to the hospital. This left Simone worried. When she enquired about the same, Lucas was left agitated. Katie asked Lucas to burn down her journals, which contained intricate details of her personal life.
They finally confessed their feelings for each other. They regretted that they shouldn’t have waited for so long. As they lay together in the bed, they pondered over happy memories and the future they could have had together. After a while, Katie had trouble breathing, and Lucas rushed to the kitchen to get some supplies, but turns out Simone had hidden them. He raced to the hospital to get some supplies to ease her pain.
Unfortunately, when he returned with the supplies, he saw Katie had already passed away. Lucas broke down, and he felt miserable and guilty of not being present when Katie passed away. He ranted to Simone and blamed her for hiding the supplies.
