Barbra Streisand recently opened up about her health, confirming that she will no longer attend the closing ceremony of the 2026 Cannes Film Festival due to an ongoing knee injury. The legendary actress, who was supposed to receive an honorary Palme d’Or at the festival’s closing ceremony on May 23, stated that doctors recommended her not to travel while she is still recovering.
Fans and admirers are upset upon hearing the news, since the actress rarely makes public appearances. The Cannes organizers confirmed that, despite the actress’s absence, the closing ceremony of the festival will feature a tribute for Streisand.
What happened to Barbra Streisand?
Streisand clarified in a statement issued by the festival that she was finally forced to cancel her travel to France due to medical advice. The singer and actress went on to say that she had been excited to celebrate the films being shown during the festival’s 79th edition and to attend the esteemed event. Streisand said:
“On the advice of my doctors, as I continue recovering from a knee injury, I am sadly unable to attend the Festival de Cannes this year. But I am deeply honored to receive the honorary Palme d’Or and had so been looking forward to celebrating the remarkable films of the 79th edition.”
She added that she had been looking forward to returning to France and spending time with other artists and filmmakers:
“I was also very much looking forward to spending time with colleagues whom I so admire — and, of course, returning to France, a place I have always loved.”
Streisand praised the Cannes organizers for acknowledging her work and complimented the filmmakers taking part in this year’s festival despite being unable to attend in person:
“While I regret that I can’t be there in person, I want to extend my warmest congratulations to all of the filmmakers from around the world whose extraordinary talent and creative vision are being celebrated this year. My heartfelt thanks to the Festival, and to everyone who continues to support and champion the art of cinema.”
The film festival sends its best wishes to Babs:
“Unfortunately, the Festival has just been informed that Ms. Barbra Streisand will be unable to attend the ceremony at the Grand Théâtre Lumière in Cannes. Iris Knobloch, Thierry Frémaux and the entire Festival team send Barbra Streisand their warmest wishes for a prompt recovery.”
Babs legendary career and Cannes honor
Barbra Streisand is one of the few actresses who have won it all. She is one of the very few who have achieved the EGOT status (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony). Other than acting, her career as a recording artist is also incredible, being one of the highest-selling female recording artists of all time.
In addition to being the first woman to win a Golden Globe for Best Director, Babs made history as the first woman to write, produce, direct, and appear in a major studio film for Yentl in 1983.
One of the most prestigious awards presented at the Cannes Film Festival is the honorary Palme d’Or. The award recognizes people who, during the course of their careers, have had a significant influence in the world of cinema.
Because of her decades of experience in acting, directing, producing, and music, Streisand was chosen for the award. With critically acclaimed films like Funny Girl, The Way We Were, Yentl, A Star Is Born, and The Prince of Tides, she is considered one of the most influential actresses in Hollywood over the years.
Festival director Thierry Frémaux previously described Streisand as the “legendary synthesis between Broadway and Hollywood, between the music hall stage and the big screen.” Frémaux added:
“Hearing her sing and seeing her perform are part of our best years.”
Iris Knobloch, the president of Cannes, commended Barbra Streisand for her influence as a public figure and artist:
“This year, we were keen to pay tribute to an artist who made her mark through the power of her art and her uncompromising pursuit of freedom.”
Back in March, when it was announced that the legendary actress would be honored, Knobloch said:
“As a woman, I am delighted to be able to express our admiration for this consummate creator and courageous citizen, whose example stands the test of time and continues to inspire.”
The president of Cannes concluded:
“A global star, Barbra Streisand is above all an artist, initiating projects that reflect who she is, that are her own and that she shares with the whole world.”
Barbra Streisand was set to receive the honorary Palme d’Or alongside John Travolta and Peter Jackson.
