Jeremy O. Harris called out OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, at the Vanity Fair Oscars Party. The Oscars took place on Sunday night, which was attended by a list of famous celebrities. Among them were also Jeremy O. Harris and Sam Altman.
During the party, Harris reportedly walked to Altman and questioned him about a new deal of his company with the military. According to Page Six, Harris reportedly called Altman:
“[Joseph] Goebbels of the Trump administration”
However, it’s not revealed what Altman responded to Jeremy O. Harris after the confrontation.
Earlier this month, OpenAI updated its deal with the Department of War, in which it stated that it will be providing tools, but with strict safety rules. They will reportedly make sure that the technology is not used for spying on people in the country, controlling autonomous weapons, or making decisions without human oversight.
Jeremy O. Harris talks about confronting Sam Altman
According to Page Six, Jeremy O. Harris talked about his confrontation with Altman in an email to the outlet in which he wrote:
“It was late and I had a few too many martinis so I misspoke when I said Goebbels… I should’ve said Friedrich Flick.”
Friedrich Flick was a German businessman who supported the Nazi regime and was later punished for his role. He later rebuilt his wealth to become one of the richest people in Germany.
As of now, Sam Altman or OpenAI has not released any statement on the same. Sam Altman is pretty active on social media and even posted a tweet on X a day earlier, admiring the work of software developers.
Along with the update posted earlier this month, Altman also posted a tweet clarifying to people how the AI will be used in the Department of War. He added:
“One thing I think I did wrong: we shouldn’t have rushed to get this out on Friday. The issues are super complex, and demand clear communication. We were genuinely trying to de-escalate things and avoid a much worse outcome, but I think it just looked opportunistic and sloppy. Good learning experience for me as we face higher-stakes decisions in the future.”
In another reply, he added:
“I think we are heading towards a world where the relationship between governments and AI efforts is critical. This will be difficult but it has to happen; I do not see any good future where we don’t get there. There should not be games and fights in the press like this; drastic government action should be avoided.”
