Elon Musk has agreed to increase the payout to creators on X. On Sunday, an X user posted a suggestion that X should boost creators’ earnings on par with YouTube to bring better content to the platform.
“If I were at X or Elon, I’d crank creator payouts way way way way up. maybe even more than YouTube (you can eat the cost to try to win AGI)… Because the platforms that actually pay will be the only ones that will have any authoritative content left once the LLMs finish eating the rest of the internet’s homework (which they have already done so for the most part). Grok’s differentiator is this,” the user suggested.
Elon Musk reacted to the post and agreed to the idea. While tagging X’s Head of Product, Nikita Bier, Musk wrote:
“Ok, let’s do it, but rigorously enforcing no gaming of the system @nikitabier”
Many X users seemed excited after Elon Musk’s announcement. Increased payouts would more likely push content creation on X. For those unfamiliar, the social media platform already pays creators. However, creators must meet the following criteria to become eligible for monetization of their account.
- You must reside in a country in which X’s monetization programs are available.
- You must be 18 or older.
- You must have an X account that has been active for at least 3 months.
- You must have a complete profile, inclusive of an account name, a bio, a profile picture, and a header image.
- You must have a verified email address.
- You must have secured your account with two-factor authentication.
- You must not be designated a state-affiliated media account.
- You must be in good standing with X, which means that:
- You have not repeatedly violated the X User Agreement or X’s Content Monetization Standards.
- You have not previously been removed as an advertiser on X for violations of our Ads policies or as an Amplify publisher on X for violations of our Amplify Pre-Roll Guidelines
- You must have an active Premium, Premium Business, or Premium Organizations subscription.
- You must connect a verified Stripe account.
- You must complete identity verification.
- Subscriptions: additional criteria.
- You maintain 2,000 or more active followers with Premium or Verified Organization subscriptions.
- Your posts have 5,000,000 or more organic impressions within the last 3 months.
- Have posted in the past 30 days.
- Comply with the Subscriptions Creator Terms.
Elon Musk raised the issue of underpayment on X
Tuesday’s announcement came after Elon Musk’s disagreement with X’s Head of Product. In September this year, while responding to an X creator, Nikita Bier said that the payout system did “more harm than good” and suggested moving to a different system. Musk commented on Bier’s post and said:
“No, the issue is that we are underpaying and not allocating payment accurately enough. YouTube does a much better job.”
Earlier on Monday, Elon Musk reshared his sister’s post. Tosca Musk, CEO of Passionflix, posted a short clip of her movie for all users and made the full film available to subscribers. Elon Musk advised users to follow her approach of sharing content on X.
