Britney Spears has been charged with a single count of misdemeanour for driving under influence of alcohol and drugs (DUI). The charge came nearly two months after she was arrested for the incident on March 4, 2026. The charges against the singer was announced on by April 30, 2026 in California by Ventura County district attorney’s office, as per TMZ.
Spears will be arraigned for the same on May 4, 2026. The DA issued a statement regarding the matter, here quoted via KTLA 5’s article on the matter on April 30, 2026. The DA office said that the singer would be offered a ‘wet reckless’ plea guilty deal:
“This DUI case will be handled according to our standard protocols. For defendants without a prior DUI history, a low blood alcohol level, and where there is no crash or injury, prosecutors typically offer what is known as a ‘wet reckless.’ This law allows a defendant to plead guilty to reckless driving involving alcohol and/or drugs.”
The plea deal entails a 12 month probation, completion of DUI class, payment of fines as mandated by state, and the defendent receives credit for time spent in custody:
“Under that offer, a defendant is placed on probation for 12 months, receives credit for any time spent in custody, is required to complete a DUI class, and must pay state-mandated fines and fees.”
The plea deal, as per the DA office press statement, is commonly offered to those who have attempted to address the underlying issues behind the offending incident.

Britney Spears was arrested after being stopped by law enforcement. The incident took place at around 8:48 p.m, as per KTLA. The vehicle was spotted near the near the Borchard Road exit in Newbury Park and subsequently stopped by officers near Westlake Boulevard.
Britney Spears took several field sobriety tests after being stopped. She was subsequently arrested for violation of the California Vehicle Code section 23152(g). The arrest took place at 9.28pm local time and she was booked at 3:00 am in the morning of March 5, 2026, as per KTLA. She was taken to a county, Ventura County Jail, before being released.
Following her arrest, her representatives released a statement to Variety:
“This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable. Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life. Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time.”
After being released, Britney Spears admitted herself to a treatment facility voluntarily, as per AP Entertainment. It is currently not known which facility the singer admitted herself to.
The driving under influence (DUI) count is the singer’s first charge of driving under influence. However, in 2007, the singer was arrested and charged for driving without license and a hit- and-run misdemeanor, with the charges being dropped in 2008. The new charge is also the singer’s first legal trouble since 2021, when her conservatorship was finally ended in November 2021.
In other news, Britney Spears reportedly sold her remaining music catalog rights for a deal worth around $200 million, as per TMZ’s article on February 10, 2026. The sale was to Primary Wave, which is a music publisher.
