Tyrese Maxey made his first media appearance since a March 7 finger injury and was upgraded to questionable as Philadelphia fights to secure a playoff seed with nine games left.
Tyrese Maxey stepped in front of reporters on Friday for the first time since a tendon strain in his right fifth finger sidelined him on March 7. He arrived at the 76ers’ final home practice of the regular season in Camden, New Jersey wearing a new splint, and the message he carried with him was cautious but pointed: he wants to play.
Maxey was upgraded to questionable for today’s road game against the Charlotte Hornets, the most meaningful injury designation the 76ers have received in weeks. Whether he suits up or not, his appearance alone reframed what this stretch run might look like for a Philadelphia team that has been missing its starting guard for 10 straight games.
Why Maxey’s availability matters so much right now
The 76ers are seventh in the Eastern Conference with nine games left in the regular season. The difference between finishing sixth and seventh is the difference between a direct playoff berth and a play-in game, and that gap is narrow enough that every game from here is a potential seeding decision.
Maxey acknowledged Friday that having the injury on his shooting hand makes the recovery process more complicated than it would be otherwise. He also referenced a similar injury from last season that affected his shooting percentages for an extended stretch. This time, he said, the roster around him is better positioned to absorb his absence if he needs additional time. That is partly a comment on how much the team has grown, and partly an acknowledgment of what the past month has actually looked like.
The 76ers went 10 games without Maxey while also navigating the tail end of Joel Embiid’s absence and Paul George’s 25-game suspension. That they still hold a playoff position with that much missing from the lineup is either a testament to their depth or a preview of how dangerous this team could become in the next few weeks.
Head coach Nick Nurse addressed the lineup questions that come with Maxey potentially returning alongside Kelly Oubre Jr., who confirmed Friday that he also plans to play in Charlotte after missing games since March 10 with a left elbow sprain. Integrating Oubre, George, and Dominick Barlow into the starting rotation around Embiid is a real puzzle, but Nurse described it as a problem he is happy to have.
The Sixers have an injury report for tomorrow’s game @ Charlotte:
Tyrese Maxey – right finger tendon strain – QUESTIONABLE
Kelly Oubre Jr. – left elbow sprain – QUESTIONABLE
Johni Broome – right knee surgery recovery – OUT
Joel Embiid is not listed.

The team Maxey is returning to
When Maxey went down in early March, the 76ers were already operating well below full strength. By the time Wednesday’s game against the Chicago Bulls arrived, the narrative around this team had been almost entirely negative for two months. Then Embiid came back and scored 35 points in his first game back from a 13-game absence. George returned from his suspension and posted 28 points, six rebounds, and four steals. Philadelphia scored more points in a single game than it had in 56 years.
Adding Maxey to that equation changes the team’s ceiling in a way that the standings do not fully capture. Embiid and George are two of the better players in the Eastern Conference. Maxey, when healthy, is a third option who can take over a playoff game on any given night. The version of the 76ers that opposing coaches have scouted all season is not what they are about to see.
What Charlotte represents tonight
The Hornets have won five consecutive games and carry the best net rating in the league since January 1. They want the same playoff spot Philadelphia is protecting, and they are playing their best basketball at the right time. Nurse called today’s game a significant test for the 76ers regardless of who is available.
Embiid is 20-1 in his career against Charlotte, a number that provides some comfort. Maxey’s history against the Hornets is shorter but no less promising. If both are on the floor today, the Hornets will be facing something they have not seen from Philadelphia this season.
Nine games left. The 76ers are finally close to whole. The timing, for better or worse for the rest of the East, could not be more inconvenient.
