The film, Voicemails for Isabelle, begins with the story of two sisters, Jill, the elder sister, and Isabelle, the younger one. The two are very close, even to the point that Jill didn’t hesitate to beat a boy in school who made fun of her sister, for which she got suspended.

After Jill starts working, she moves out, but she makes sure to call Isabelle every day to make her laugh with her weird stories. One day, Jill’s parents ask her to come back immediately, and she learns about Isabelle’s death.

This leaves Jill shattered as she tries moving forward in her career. On the other hand, she also faces difficulties in the workspace where she works under Chef Bastien, who doesn’t hesitate to criticize her whenever he can.

While waiting for a date, she meets Tyler, who is waiting for his own date. Tyler develops an interest in her and asks her for her number. However, Jill politely declines doing so, and in response, he gives his own number to her. While everything was going pretty well between them, he ghosts her after sleeping with her.

After Isabelle’s death, her phone number is reassigned to Wes’s work phone. Wes starts receiving calls and voicemails from Jill, where she speaks about her day, her experiences, and how much she misses her sister. While at first he was enjoying the voicemails, which were full of surprises and excitement, after talking to his friends Andy and Breeda, he decided to tell Jill everything.

Jill, who was usually all cheered up, sends Isabelle a voice message opening up on how much she misses her and their pact of dying together and not leaving each other, which leaves Wes speechless.

In another voicemail, Jill shares her disappointment after Tyler visits her, only to disappear from her life without any explanation. She decides to confront Tyler openly in his live podcast. Wes, who has become curious about Jill and already knows what she looks like from Instagram, also goes to the event.

When Tyler asks the audience to ask him their questions, Jill stands up and indirectly recalls everything, talks about accountability, and leaves. She goes to her regular sitting area, wishing one day someone would just come and sit next to her as they fall for each other.

Wes comes and sits next to her, completing her wish. When Jill stands to leave, Wes tries talking to her and asks for tacos. The two immediately bond and start spending time.

Voicemails for Isabelle recap: What happens after Jill learns the truth about Wes?

As Jill and Wes come closer, they start falling for each other. She even meets Breeda and Tyler and attends their wedding. Wes has made sure Jill knows how much he admires her. However, his secret doesn’t last long, as just when he was planning to tell her the truth, Jill learns the truth about him having Isabelle’s number.

Wes gives Jill his coat to keep warm, but his phone is still in his pocket. When Jill calls Isabelle’s number, the phone rings, and she realizes it belongs to Wes. Wes explains that he got the number via his work, and he was about to tell her everything. However, Jill feels betrayed, realizing that he knew everything from the bench, tacos, and her favorite hanging place, and it was all set up.

In his workspace, Chef Bastien chooses Arthur over her, which leaves her frustrated as she questions his judgment and leaves the place. She opens her own food truck after receiving Isabelle’s college tuition fee from her parents and their bedroom sign, which reads “Jill & Izzy.” While it doesn’t work in the beginning, after Zella joins her, together they build a successful business.

On the other hand, when Wes learns that Jill has lost all the voicemails from Isabelle, he quietly helps get them back without telling her. He tells her that he would be at José’s on New Year’s Eve. The voicemail is ultimately restored, and one of the voicemails pushes her to go and meet Wes.

The two finally met and came back together. Near the end of Voicemails for Isabelle, Wes leaves a voicemail for Isabelle, asking for a sign as he plans to ask Jill to move in with him. Around the same time, Jill sends her final voicemail to Isabelle, saying that she is doing okay. Just then, the song “Dancing on My Own” begins playing, which Wes takes as a sign, and the couple shares a dance together.
