The Walking Dead’s Scott M. Gimple teases Daryl Dixon-Rick Grimes reunion plans

AMC’s post-apocalyptic horror, The Walking Dead’s franchise Chief Content Officer, Scott M. Gimple, has teased a most awaited reuion.

In an interview with Brandon Davis on YouTube, Gimple revealed that the reunion of Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes and Norman Reedus’s Daryl Dixon is on the cards. He further added that he has gone through ample scenarios and is confident that the audience might catch a glimpse of the iconic brotherhood of Rick and Daryl soon. Gimple shared,

“I’ve already sketched out several scenarios and plot twists for this storyline. It might take some time, or it might happen tomorrow, or when I retire. But I think we’ll get there eventually. We have enough emotional and narrative material to make something brilliant.”

Here’s more about it.

The Walking Dead franchise may bring back the iconic duo of Daryl Dixon and Rick Grimes

Scott M. Gimple has decided to bring back the iconic duo of Daryl and Rick after a decade or so. He added that there is enough material to build their reunion plot.

Daryl Dixon and Rick Grimes may have initially begun as frenemies; however, after the death of Shane and disapperance or Merle, their bond strengthened.

Together, they fought the challenges at the prison, from the walker threats to the Governor’s wicked tricks. In between, there were disagreements, but their separations always ended in happy reunions. In Season 6, The Next World, we got to see lighter friendship moments between the two.

Rick and Daryl are nothing less than friendship goals. After surviving the Claimers and prison, Rick appreciated Daryl for his efforts in turning on the Claimers and called him his brother. Daryl, who was distraught after losing Beth, found solace in Rick’s words.

By the beginning of Season 9, things became as Daryl was not happy with the Saviors being integrated into the group, but accepted Rick as leader. At that moment, Daryl shared that he didn’t want Rick to survive and told him that he was ready to die for him. Although they were at odds, their bond remained strong.

In Season 9, Episode 5, when an injured Rick got separated from the group, he led the walkers away to save the community. Rick realized that he needed to blow up the bridge containing the walkers, and before doing so, he looked at Daryl for the last time before they were separated. However, Lincoln’s departure after Season 9 didn’t mark the end of Rick’s story.

In Season 11 Episode 24, he made a surprise appearance, and it was revealed that he survived the blast and was kidnapped by the CRM. Rick’s story continued in The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, a six-episode mini-series.

While Daryl’s story continued in the spin-off, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Season 4 will follow Daryl and Carol’s adventures in Spain. Season 4 is expected to be the final season. This means that a reunion of Rick and Daryl will be possible only if the franchise develops another spin-off.

Scott M. Gimple on production difficulties

Even though Gimple has teased a reunion of Rick and Daryl, he has pointed out how that seems difficult due to production problems in 2026. However, he is hopeful about it. Gimple has not specified the production difficulties, but it might be due to the cast’s unavailability. Reedus took to social media to share his last day of shoot for Daryl Dixon as he wrote,

“Today is my last day filming as Daryl Dixon. It has been an absolute joy playing this guy with all of you for so many years. I feel truly blessed. Sincerely.”

However, the franchise has not made an official announcement of Reedus’ exit. The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Season 4 is expected to release in the fall of 2026.
