The Social Reckoning, which is a companion piece to The Social Network, has been in development since 2025. Directed by Aaron Sorkin, the film is going to follow the 2021 Facebook leak by Frances Haugen, who used to work at the company.
A teaser trailer for the upcoming film has been released, and it teases the behind-the-scenes of a leak that changed how we perceive Facebook forever.
The Social Reckoning trailer highlights the battle between ethics and profit at Facebook
The trailer opens with Facebook employee Frances Haugen (played by Mikey Madison), talking to a journalist, Jeff Horwitz (played by Jeremy Allen White). Frances clearly states that she loves Facebook, and the reason she’s even talking to Jeff and revealing confidential company information is because she wants to help the platform, not hurt it.
The Social Reckoning trailer then cuts to Mark Zuckerberg (played by Jeremy Strong), testifying in front of the U.S. Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Product Safety, and Data Security. The film is going to cover the 2021 Facebook leak, which revealed that the platform was aware that its platforms were harming society. However, instead of addressing these harms, the platform insisted on prioritizing profits.
We then see the continuation of Frances’ conversation with Jeff, as she says,
“I ran classifiers on political groups where 30% of content hits multiple risk factors.”
Irrespective of how complicated it sounds, it doesn’t sound good. We then see a man named Charlie, who appears to be Mark Zuckerberg’s acquaintance, tell him,
“These guys are counting on the next round of congressional testimony to make you likeable Mark. I’m happy to lend a hand, but I think you’re doomed.”
The Social Reckoning teaser shows us Mark arguing that his responsibility is to keep people connected, not to make sure they are saying the right things. He refuses to take accountability for the harmful effects of Facebook on users because he is not the one lying or forcing people to do anything.

The Social Reckoning will thus heavily focus on how companies like Facebook don’t take take responsibility for their actions and often get away with a lot of harmful actions. We then see Frances shed more light on the issues of the platform. She reveals that the senior leadership knows what’s happening but are doing nothing about it.
A conversation between Jeff and a man who seems to be another employee suggests that employees would rather make enemies with the mafia than go up against Mark Zuckerberg. But Frances will do everything she can, including violating her NDA and giving the internal documents of the company to Jeff so that he can reveal the story to the public.
As Jeff talks to other Facebook leadership, we learn that the company was no longer afraid of the government, as it believed it was beyond law. In The Social Reckoning, Jeff and Frances will have very little time to publish the story of Facebook prioritizing profits over ethics, but they will risk everything to do so.
The Social Reckoning will be released in theaters on October 9, 2026.
