The Punisher: One Last Kill has brought Frank Castle back and the casting is one of the best things about the Special. It’s the first time Castle is leading his show after his Netflix days. It’s an hour of blood, grief, and moral ambiguity, exactly what fans have come to expect from Bernthal’s take on the character. Beyond Jon Bernthal, here’s who brought it to life.
Bernthal leads the cast of course. He first appeared in the second season of Daredevil in 2016 after which he had his own series from 2017 to 2019. He also co-wrote the screenplay alongside director Reinaldo Marcus Green, which is a first for him. The man has clearly earned his place at the creative table
Deborah Ann Woll is back as Karen Page, and director Green explained that characters like Karen and Curtis Hoyle are brought back specifically to ground the audience in Frank’s emotional history, reminding viewers where he’s been before pulling them into where he is now.
Jason R. Moore is back as Curtis Hoyle, the role he played across 21 episodes of the Netflix Punisher series. Curtis has always been Frank’s moral compass and closest confidant, but his presence in the Special is different, as he only shows up in Frank’s hallucinations and not physically. The show heavily implies that he may have passed away, but it’s all speculations for now.
New faces like Ma Gnucci, Andre Royo in The Punisher: One Last Kill?
The biggest addition is Judith Light as Ma Gnucci. Ma Gnucci is the matriarch of what remains of the Gnucci Crime Family, and she carries a deep personal grudge against Frank for the murder of her son. It’s a character pulled directly from the comics, and the way her arc plays out in the special closely mirrors her source material. Joining her is Andre Royo stars as Dre, owner of Donut, the husband of Debbie, and father to Charli.
There are a lot more new faces in The Punisher: One Last Kill. Mila Jaymes plays named Charli, with Nick Koumalatsos, Cody Alford, and Colton Hill as members of Castle’s former Marine squad. It’s a significant casting as in real life, those three actors are actual Marines. Talking about their involvement in the project, Green stated,
“[Jon] consulted and worked very closely with [Marine Raiders] Nick Koumalatsos and Cody Alford, as well as [Green Beret] Colton Hill. Not only were those guys cast in the special, but they were part of building and designing the character — his psychological state, where he was, where you find him now. Think about what they go through when they come home from war — what they’ve seen. That was helpful for us in terms of understanding the character and where he’s coming from.”
Returning faces like Woll and Moore give the special emotional continuity, while Light’s Ma Gnucci introduces the kind of villain who could haunt Frank well beyond this single hour. For a project that runs less than 60 minutes, it packs in a lot.
