Mun Ka-young and Choi Woo-shik have been confirmed to lead Whale Star: The Gyeongseong Mermaid (currently the working title). As explained above, this K-drama will be nothing like the roles these stars have played in their other Korean dramas.

Here’s a look at the stars, set to play key roles:

Mun Ka-young as Heo Su-a: She’s a soft-hearted and sea-loving maid who ends up being mute and then seeks revenge.

Choi Woo-shik as Kang Ui-hyeon: The male lead is an independence activist from a wealthy family who knows different languages. Not only this, but Ui-hyeon also runs a photo studio cover while fighting for the country and atoning for his father’s actions.

Heo Nam-jun as Song Hae-su: This character will likely create curiosity among viewers. Hae-sun is a fiery independence activist and comrade who’s dealing with family loss.

Whale Star: The Gyeongseong Mermaid K-drama plot details

This story takes place in 1926 Korea, a period when the country was under Japanese rule. The main character, Heo Su-a, is a 17-year-old girl from a poor family who ends up working as a servant after being sold into service.

Despite the challenges in her life, she loves swimming and spending time near the sea. One day, after repeatedly dreaming about an injured whale, she comes across Kang Ui-hyeon, a wounded independence activist who has been washed ashore.

Su-a knew that he was wanted by the authorities and if she helped him openly, there would be consequences. Yet, the teenager takes risks and secretly cares for him and helps him recover.

However, her life takes a tragic turn when an assassination mission carried out by one of Ui-hyeon’s fellow activists goes wrong. The incident leaves Su-a unable to speak. Determined to seek justice and revenge for what happened, she leaves her old life behind and travels to Gyeongseong, which is known today as Seoul.

After reaching Gyeongseong, Su-a struggles in the complex and dangerous world of people fighting for Korea’s independence. However, she has no choice but to take part in such activities and unexpectedly finds hidden secrets and truths.

Whale Star: The Gyeongseong Mermaid will arrive in 2027 on tvN and is also expected to hit major streaming platforms for the global audience. Stay tuned for more updates!
