To help you catch up before watching Season 2, here’s a recap of everything that happened in the first season.
My Family Season 1 Recap: Everything that happened in the first season before starting Season 2

Before we jump into the recap, let’s have a quick look at the main characters of My Family Season 1. At the center of the drama, we have Fausto, a man who doesn’t have much time left in life. He has a mother named Lucia, and his younger brother is Valerio. Fausto is married to Sarah and has two sons, named Libero and Ercole. He has a best friend as well from school named Demetrio, and we also see another best friend, Maria.
What happens to Fausto?
In My Family Season 1, Fausto was seen in his early forties, dealing with a terminal illness. Due to his condition, he didn’t have much time in hand. He also used to dream a lot, seeing happier versions of the people he loved the most.
The father of the two spends the first season trying to bring his family and close friends together while dealing with his own condition. He was in fear of what would happen to his two sons, Libero and Ercole, after his death. At the end of Season 1, Fausto dies, leaving everyone devastated.
What happened to Lucia?
In My Family Season 1, Fausto’s mother, Lucia, only cared about finding a rich and young boyfriend for herself. Because of her self-focused behavior, she didn’t spend much time with her grandsons, Libero and Ercole, and only cared about herself. Though this is not the complete truth, as Lucia did care a lot about the people she loved, like her son, but didn’t know how to show it.
Fausto’s condition made her finally change, as she became more responsible and even decided to take care of her grandsons by moving to Milan. She even set her feelings aside after Libero left her a note saying unkind things.
Lucia, in search of a boyfriend, met Sergio, a doctor at a hospital where her son used to go for treatment. After slapping him after the proposal, she finally understood that Sergio came with good intentions and decided to marry him.
What happened to Valerio?
Fausto’s younger brother, Valerio, was shown as quick-tempered, struggling with drugs in My Family Season 1. However, after he came to know about his brother’s deteriorating health, he eventually improved and attended counseling to help control his anger. The two brothers shared a very strong bond in their childhood, which is why the death of his brother affected Valerio a lot, so much so that he even decided to leave the drugs.
We did see some positive changes in him by the end of My Family Season 1. He also met a woman named Valeria, and the pair formed a connection after finding common ground.
What happened to Demetrio?
In My Family Season 1, Fausto’s best friend, Demetrio, is shown as a clumsy person who didn’t have much confidence in himself. While he clearly had feelings for Maria, he never expressed them to her and kept them to himself.
Like Valerio, as the season progressed, the viewers saw a change in his behavior, and he slowly gained confidence and opened up to Maria about the love he had for her. The two ended up kissing each other as Maria left for Mexico, with Demetrio waiting for her to return to start a serious relationship.
What happened to Maria?
Another close friend of Fausto and the love interest of Demetrio, Maria had complicated feelings for Fausto. After moving to Rome, she found it hard to fit in the place and eventually decided to move to Mexico after her friend died.
Instead of pushing Demetrio again after listening to his confession, she decided to give him a chance, leaving possibilities for their future open, which we might see in Season 2.
What happened to Fausto’s two sons, Libero and Ercole?
After their father’s death, both sons, Libero and Ercole, were ordered by the court to stay with their grandmother, Lucia, and not with their mother, Sarah.
But why not Sarah? It turns out that Sarah had postpartum mental health issues, which made her relationship with her younger son, Ercole, a little complicated, as she thought he didn’t like her. However, she wasn’t a bad mother since she only wanted good for them, but the complicated relationship with her husband just made their relationship worse.
After the court’s order, Libero wanted to live with his mother, something that Ercole wasn’t okay with, as he decided to stay with Lucia. As a result, the brothers end up on different sides, something that might be explored further in Season 2.
My Family Season 1 did a great job in setting the whole storyline for the main characters. And now with Season 2 out on Netflix, it will be interesting to see where the two brothers end up and where the love story of Fausto’s best friend will go from here.
