Tennis vs Pickleball? New comedy The Dink teases sports debate we never thought we needed

Directed by Josh Greenbaum and written by Sean Clements, The Dink is Apple TV’s upcoming comedy film about a former pro tennis player who hates pickleball, and has to go against his natural instincts and play the sport.

The trailer for the film has been released, which gives us a glimpse at how important tennis is to Dusty Boyd and how much he hates pickleball. However, when playing pickleball is his best shot at recovering from an injury and saving his father’s club, that’s what he has to do.

The Dink movie trailer reveals an intense rivalry between tennis and pickleball

The Dink movie trailer opens with Chuck Boyd (played by Edward Harris), who owns a tennis club, talking about how the elegance and the aesthetic perfection of tennis, along with the sport itself, need protection from pickleball. He even goes a mile forward and calls the sport an epidemic that’s taking over the country.

Next, we see Dusty Boyd (played by Jake Johnson) express the same sentiments as his father as he throws a pickleball ball far away when a lady named Candance (played by Mary Steenburgen) tries to play the sport at their tennis club. In his prime time, Dusty was a pro tennis player and was known as “The Hammer”.

But now, he spends his days teaching children how to play tennis at his father’s club. His only flex now is that he’s the one

“who almost beat Andy Roddick.”

As The Dink movie trailer shows, Dusty then has one of the most unfortunate days of his life when he has a wrist injury and the doctor (played by Ben Stiller) prescribes him to play pickleball to fix it. Dusty is obviously not happy about it and is extremely reluctant to play the sport. But as he begins to play the sport he hates so much to help with his recovery, the unexpected happens: he starts to actually like pickleball.

The trailer shows Candance telling Dusty how he could be a great pickleball player, but things aren’t that simple for him to really embrace the sport. While Dusty struggles with accepting the fact that pickleball isn’t actually that bad, his father Chuck still hates the sport with a passion. What’s even worse is that Chuck wants to settle the rivalry in court, but we don’t exactly know that would go.

The Dink also stars Chloe Fineman as Marisa, Patton Oswalt as Skip, Aaron Chen as PJ, John McEnroe as himself, and Andy Roddick as himself. Martin Kove, Chris Parnell, Christine Taylor, Lynne Marie Stewart, and Cayden Romero are also part of the cast, but what characters they play are yet to be revealed.

The Dink is produced by Ben Stiller, John Lesher, Rob Paris, Mike Witherill, and Jake Johnson. The production companies behind the film are Red Hour Films and Rivulet Films. Apple Original Films is the distributing company.

The Dink will be released on Apple TV on July 24, 2026.
