Apple TV’s hit series, Ted Lasso, is set to return in August 2026 with Season 4. The comedy series, which was supposed to end with Season 3, will be back with several OG characters and a new storyline revolving around a women’s soccer team.
In a new interview with ScreenRant, co-creator Bill Lawrence opened up about scraping the 3-season plan and returning with a Season 4. He revealed that his creative team always comes up with a three-season plan for all of their TV shows, pitching “a beginning, middle, and end,” which also happened with Ted Lasso and Shrinking as well.
However, he further revealed that the show’s talented cast and crew, along with its global success, were the reasons Apple TV asked to produce another season, which he shared will have a new storyline.
More on this in our story.
Ted Lasso returns with a new storyline in Season 4
Season 3 of Ted Lasso showed the return of Jason Sudeikis’ Ted to the States. After helping out the AFC Richmond team for three seasons, Ted ultimately chooses to be a good father to his son rather than coach Richmond and returns to Kansas.
While Season 3 was set as a potential series finale with the fate of all the important characters revealed, the sports comedy was still renewed for Season 4. Co-creator Bill Lawrence explained in a ScreenRant interview that all the shows that he and his creative team make come with a three-season plan. However, due to the popularity of shows such as Ted Lasso and Shrinking, the streamer picked them for another Season.
In Season 3, Keeley reopens her PR firm and proposes the idea of an AFC Richmond Women’s team to Rebecca, which is what Season 4 will focus on.
As per Apple TV, the synopsis of the sports comedy’s Season 4 reads as:
“Ted returns to Richmond, taking on his biggest challenge yet: coaching a second division women’s football team. Throughout the course of the season, Ted and the team learn to leap before they look, taking chances they never thought they would.”
Apart from revealing the reason behind the show’s return with a new season, Lawrence also shared that the upcoming chapter will not be a “continuation” of the previous story and stated:
“I know Jason had a vision, and I don’t want to give spoilers about what Ted would do next, but I think the time passage buys you the story, and I think people really like it. It’s not just a continuation of Ted Lasso. It’s not a continuation of Ted Lasso, otherwise Jamie Tartt wouldn’t be on the show Rooster.”
The upcoming chapter will bring Sudeikis’s character back to Richmond. Along with him, Brett Goldstein, Hannah Waddingham, Jeremy Swift, Juno Temple, and Brendan Hunt are set to reprise their roles. Furthermore, Jude Mack, Rex Hayes, Abbie Hern, Tanya Reynolds, and Aisling Sharkey are said to join the Season of the fan-favorite sports comedy.
