Supergirl Opens June 26 DC Universe

Supergirl launches the second film in James Gunn’s DC Universe on June 26. Director Craig Gillespie brings Tom King’s “Woman of Tomorrow” comic miniseries to the screen with Milly Alcock in the lead role.

The film follows Kara Zor-El on a revenge quest across the galaxy. She hunts her adoptive sister’s killer. The supporting cast includes Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, and David Corenswet returning from earlier DCU installments.

Gunn’s slate aims to rebuild DC films after years of inconsistent releases and creative direction. Supergirl is his second franchise film after Creature Commandos. The film released internationally June 24, hitting North American theaters today.

Initial reviews proved mixed. Critics praised Alcock’s performance and the film’s visual scope. Some questioned pacing and tonal shifts. Early reactions suggest solid entertainment rather than critical breakthrough.

The film releases in IMAX across North America. Industry projections suggest a $40-50 million opening weekend, trailing Toy Story 5 but claiming second place.

Gunn has staked DC’s future on building a cohesive universe with known characters reimagined for contemporary audiences. Supergirl serves as proof of concept for that strategy.
