A Friday afternoon at Summit Mall turned frantic just after 3 p.m. Today, when gunfire erupted in the parking lot outside the Fairlawn shopping center, triggering a full evacuation and drawing officers from four separate law enforcement agencies to the scene.
The shooting occurred outside Dewey’s Pizza, a restaurant adjacent to the mall. Several shoppers who were leaving the building around 3:30 p.m. told reporters they heard a single gunshot before the situation escalated into a broad police response.

Fairlawn police were first on the scene, but the response quickly expanded. Officers from the Copley Police Department, the Akron Police Department, and the Summit County Sheriff’s Office all arrived to assist. Shell casings were recovered from the scene, confirming that at least one shot had been fired. One male was taken into custody. No victims were identified and no injuries were reported, according to Akron police Lt. Michael Miller Jr.
