Steven Spielberg reacts to Timothee Chalamet’s viral diss on ballet & opera, compares Netflix with theater experience

Steven Spielberg is one of the most iconic directors of all time.

His classic films and contributions to cinema continue to influence the medium’s evolution.

In the latest news about the Jurassic Park director, Steven Spielberg is the latest industry personality to respond to Timothée Chalamet’s comments about the opera & ballet. During a March 13 SXSW keynote conversation, the legendary director shared,

“But for me, the real experience comes when we can influence a community to congregate in a strange, dark space where all of us are strangers. At the end of a really good movie experience, we are all united with a whole bunch of feelings that we walk into the daylight with, or into the nighttime with.”

He added,

“And there’s nothing like that. It happens in movies, and in concerts. And it happens in ballet and opera, by the way. And we want that to be sustained. We want that to go forever.”

Steven Spielberg’s upcoming film, Disclosure Day, is set to release in theatres on July 12.

Steven Spielberg on upcoming foray into the Western genre, more

Interestingly, Steven Spielberg also shared that he has a Western project currently in development at SXSW, after admitting the genre has “eluded [him] for decades.” While he kept most of the details close to the vest, he did share,

“I can’t reveal anything right now, but I have something in development. And it kicks ass. There will be horses. There will be guns. There will be no tropes, I can tell you that. There’s going to be no stereotypes.”

Also at SXSW, Spielberg discussed the timing of former President Barack Obama’s comments about extraterrestrial life and how it aligns with the release of his upcoming epic, Disclosure Day, which revolves around similar themes.

“When President Obama made that comment, I thought, ‘Oh my god, this is so great for “Disclosure Day.” This is amazing,’” he said. “Then two days later, he stepped back the comments and said what he believed in was life in the cosmos — which, of course, everybody should believe in. Because no one should ever think that that we are the only intelligent civilization in the entire universe.”

Spielberg went on to add to the subject of UAPs,

“All of you here should read about this and see the plethora of documentaries about this dating back to 2018. I don’t know any more than any of you do, but I have a very strong suspicion that we are not alone here on Earth right now.”

This will be Steven Spielberg’s first film release since 2022’s The Fabelmans.
