Stephanie was staring at the wall in her apartment when Alex returned home with dinner. “I’m not that hungry, and I’ve got so much work I’ve got to catch up on,” Stephanie said. Alex encouraged Stephanie to take some time off. “I’m fine. I just need to focus,” Stephanie said. As Stephanie typed on her computer, Alex rubbed her shoulders. A look of discomfort spread across Stephanie’s face. Johnny knocked on the door.

“I heard that Theo was coming back. So does that mean you’re going to be rejoining us at Titan?” Alex asked. Johnny said no, and he declined to discuss the matter. Johnny said he wanted to apologize to Stephanie about the plagiarism case. “If I knew Bonnie’s book was a copy of yours, I never would have bought the rights,” Johnny said. Johnny told Stephanie that he was sorry that she would have to face a court matter after her ordeal. Stephanie thanked Johnny for his apology and she said she would be okay.

“Just know that I am going to protect you in any way that I can and I will not let this affect your writing career,” Johnny said. “It doesn’t matter. I don’t have a writing career any more,” Stephanie said. Stunned, Alex asked Stephanie if she was sure. Stephanie said yes. “Kate will have to understand,” Stephanie added.

After Johnny left, Alex asked Stephanie if she ever planned to write again. “Maybe someday I’ll get back to it. But right now, the idea of telling someone else’s love story, digging into that emotion, the joy and the pain, I just can’t do it anymore,” Stephanie explained. Stephanie asked Alex if he was disappointed in her. “I could never be disappointed with you,” Alex said. Alex told Stephanie that she did not need to worry about Titan. “I almost lost you, Steph. The only thing that matters to me is that you are home and safe,” Alex noted.

Alex offered to put their dinner in the fridge. Stephanie joked that she would eat in the middle of the night when she couldn’t sleep. Alex encouraged Stephanie to wake him up if she needed company. “You’re not alone,” Alex said. Stephanie nodded yes. Alex told Stephanie that he would do anything he could to make her feel safe again.

“I hate feeling afraid all the time,” Stephanie sighed. Alex promised to keep Stephanie safe from any future threats. “I know you mean that, and I love you for saying it. But you promised that before, and it wasn’t enough,” Stephanie said. Stephanie noted that even with the police and her father, she had not been safe. “I have to feel confident that I can protect myself,” Stephanie admitted. Stephanie announced that she wanted to get a gun.

Marlena met up with Kate at the Brady Pub for dinner. “Can you tell me what’s going on at Titan?” Marlena asked. “I assume you mean the situation with Johnny?” Kate countered. Surprised, Marlena asked what Kate was talking about. Kate told Marlena that Johnny would not be returning to Titan, but she told Marlena to talk to Johnny about the details.

“Titan is barely staying afloat. Maybe it’s better that he stays at DiMera,” Kate said. Kate asked what Marlena had wanted to discuss. Marlena announced that she planned to take on a consulting role at Basic Black. “I was wondering if you would like to step in and help me run Basic Black?” Marlena asked. Kate said she was honored.

Marlena and Kate toasted to their partnership. Roman walked over. “Are we celebrating something?” Roman asked. Johnny walked in. When Marlena asked about Johnny’s decision not to return to Titan, Johnny told her about the lawsuit. “[Kate] set me up,” Johnny said.

Xander was packing up his briefcase in the Titan CEO office when Maggie marched in to complain about Kate and Xander’s decision to file a lawsuit. “You went behind my back because you knew I would be outraged,” Maggie said. Xander argued the matter was purely a legal issue that they had discovered. Suspicious, Maggie guessed that Johnny had been the fall guy from the start.

“You are aware that he believes that this was a setup, right?” Maggie said. “I’m aware that’s his claim, yes,” Xander said. Maggie asked Xander if Johnny’s accusation was true. “I’m sure it’s much easier for Johnny to blame Kate and me than his own incompetence,” Xander said. Maggie argued that Xander and Kate had concocted a plan to take advantage of Johnny’s inexperience.

“If you and Kate did set up Johnny to go down for this, you crossed a line. Not just how you treated him, but how it affects Stephanie and Bonnie,” Maggie said. Maggie refused to hurt her family when she ran the company. “And that’s exactly why you aren’t fit to run this company, Maggie. You have neither the grit nor the guts to keep Titan afloat,” Xander argued. Maggie said she regretted that she had allowed Xander to regain power.

“You couldn’t have stopped me even if you wanted to,” Xander said. Maggie reminded Xander that she could have told everyone that Xander had beaten Philp. Xander countered that the whole family had been complicit in the cover-up. Maggie argued that Xander was no longer pretending to be nice because he had secured visitation rights with Victoria.

“I’m the only one doing what’s necessary for this family. Victor would understand,” Xander said. Maggie disagreed. Maggie argued that Xander’s plan had caused them to miss the loan repayment. “I already made that payment,” Xander said. “How?” Maggie asked. Xander explained that he had liquidated some assets in South America. Maggie told Xander that she had already looked into selling that equipment, and it had not been a viable option.

When Maggie warned Xander not to underestimate her, Xander said he saw her clearly. “And I see you as you are, Xander. And it tears me apart to see the damage you’ve caused, not to others but to yourself,” Maggie said. Maggie asked Xander about the money. Xander cautioned Maggie not to ask questions. With a nod, Maggie said Victor had kept her away from elements of his business.

“And he was right to do that. He kept your hands clean,” Xander said. “Does Philip know what you did?” Maggie asked. Xander danced around the question. Maggie argued that Xander had further endangered the company by laundering money. “I did what I had to do to save Victor’s company,” Xander said. “If it takes this to save Titan, maybe it isn’t worth saving,” Maggie said.

In the Kiriakis living room, Sarah was reading when Philip and Gabi walked in. Philip explained that they had moved into the mansion, and he stressed that Maggie was okay with the move. “And Xander? How did he react?” Sarah asked. Philip admitted he had not told his brother yet. Confused, Gabi said she thought that Philip and Xander had been getting along.

“Most of the time,” Philip admitted. Philip said he did not believe that Xander would react violently because he had worked on his anger issues. Sarah disagreed. Gabi suggested that Xander was focused on bigger matters than Philip’s living situation, but Sarah countered that Xander could turn the house into a war zone.

When Sarah hinted that they did not need to discuss the past, Philip told Sarah that Gabi knew about the forged letter. “Gabi and I don’t have secrets from one another,” Philip said. “Oh, that’s nice,” Sarah said sarcastically. Philip reminded Sarah that she had argued for complete honesty in a relationship. “It’s the only way it can work. Right, Gabi?” Philip said. Gabi nodded yes. Sarah advised Philip to go upstairs since Xander was on his way over to see Victoria.

As Philip turned to leave, Xander walked in. “What’s going on?” Xander asked. “We’re moving into the house. With Maggie’s permission, of course. Does that upset you?” Philip asked. Xander laughed. Xander noted that he did not live there, so his opinion did not matter.

After Philip and Gabi headed upstairs to be alone, Sarah apologized for assuming that Xander would blow up over Philip’s news. “I’m actually very impressed,” Sarah said. “It’s like I said, I don’t live here anymore, so my opinion doesn’t matter. However, I do find it interesting who Maggie decides to dole out forgiveness to,” Xander said.

At Titan, Maggie left another voicemail for Kate. “I just had a conversation with Xander, and I am appalled by what is going on with this company,” Maggie complained. At the pub, Kate noticed Maggie’s call on her phone and ignored it. Johnny explained to Roman and Marlena that Kate had maneuvered him to publish a book that she knew was at risk for a plagiarism suit. Roman asked Kate if she had set Johnny up. Kate said no.

“Roman, I actually kind of resent you assuming the worst of me when I can explain everything,” Kate said. Before Kate could explain more, Marlena escorted Johnny outside. “I never read that manuscript, and I thought I was doing Johnny a favor when I gave him my blessings to publish it. I did not set him up,” Kate lied.

Outside the pub, Johnny told Marlena that he had decided to stay on as CEO at DiMera since Theo had decided to step down from the company for personal reasons. Johnny admitted that he had not told Chanel yet. Marlena reminded Johnny of when he had unilaterally acted to cancel Trey’s adoption. Johnny promised that he intended to talk to Chanel. Johnny confessed that he was worried Chanel would not agree with his decision.
