Sheriff Country Episode 19 “Compromised” gave this season one of its most important hours. It shows Sheriff Mickey Fox increasingly under federal scrutiny due to her father Wes’ marijuana enterprise and the shady deals associated with Emerald Eden LLC.
The episode showed Mickey under pressure from all sides; the DEA was questioning her, her deputies wouldn’t support her, and her daughter Skye was attacked in what looked like a drug relapse but turned out to be an attempted murder.
The episode pushed the show’s core family conflict further into darker territory by forcing Mickey to accept the possibility that her personal loyalty to Wes could soon mean the ruin of her professional career. Instead of a typical police procedural episode focusing on a crime being solved, “Compromised” focuses on all of the fallout (legal, political, and personal) associated with the ongoing Emerald Eden investigation.
The episode also reiterated one of the major themes of the season, that personal connections quickly turn into liabilities when you involve your public life and office responsibilities.
Sheriff Country Episode 19: Focuses on DEA scrutiny and Wes’ illegal operation
The main problem in the Sheriff Country Episode 19 is that Mickey becomes more vulnerable because of Wes and his illegal business. Federal agents start looking into whether Mickey knew about and ignored the crimes linked to Emerald Eden LLC, like growing marijuana and shady land deals that had already been raising questions earlier in the season.
The DEA was watching Mickey. She tried to stay in charge at work and show she was not part of her family’s crimes. Her problem was not that she did the crimes herself, but that it looked like she might have.
The tension became palpable with several instances of deputies questioning Mickey’s knowledge. The tension in the sheriff’s office grew as her authority was clearly challenged. The show also used the examination of Mickey’s complicity with Wes’ crimes to examine her complex relationship with him and her ability to separate herself from his illegal operation.
It was impossible in Sheriff Country Episode 19 to maintain that separation, as each new revelation was directly linked to Mickey and her father’s operations. The show further explored the questionable land deals involving Emerald Eden LLC and whether or not those deals were tied to a broader criminal conspiracy.
Instead of an answer, the deal and the company became the greater focus of suspicion in the last few episodes of the season. Mickey’s emotional fatigue was becoming more and more apparent and hard to ignore as the sheriff struggled to hold both the department and the family together. While federal agents turned their backs on her word, Skye’s overdose turned out to be an attempt to murder.
Sheriff Country Episode 19 gave the biggest twist of the hour when Skye’s condition was no longer looked at as a relapse but as an attempted murder, which immediately brought new and important variables into play regarding the criminal enterprise with which the family was involved.
Skye’s health problem only served to highlight the danger that criminal activity could lead to, moving beyond criminal activity to outright physical violence against another person. Skye’s struggle to survive also deeply affected Mickey and added emotional distress and conflict on top of the already existing personal and professional problems. The pressure she faced was making her as much a victim as anyone else.
Sheriff Country Episode 19 used Skye’s story as evidence for the pervasive feeling of distrust and paranoia among all characters. No one can quite figure out who is lying and who can be trusted in light of the expanding conspiracy. The investigation seems to be getting nowhere.
The episode was also careful not to give easy answers and was largely displayed as a setup for future conflicts. The episode ended, leaving Mickey as isolated and under as much pressure as ever. Her career and personal life were in jeopardy; the Emerald Eden investigation was made the driving endgame plot line of Sheriff County in the episode “Compromised” by increasing both legal and emotional ramifications.
The threat on the ground grew closer to finding answers in Sheriff Country’s episode, “Compromised.” As more and more lives hung in the balance of the Emerald Eden fallout, Sheriff Country entered into a much more volatile arena.
The episode ended in a palpable unease that Mickey’s struggle may not only be to clear her name, but also to ascertain just how many more dominoes can be kept from falling.
