Three Henrico County men face first-degree murder charges in the Feb. 21 mass shooting that killed two people and wounded seven others in Richmond’s Shockoe Bottom neighborhood.
Three men have been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the Feb. 21 mass shooting in Richmond’s Shockoe Bottom neighborhood that left two people dead and seven others wounded. Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards confirmed Saturday that one of the suspects charged in the killings is the brother of one of the two people who died that night.
The victims and the suspects in Shockoe
The two people killed in the shooting were Dominic Jackson, 42, of Henrico County, and Genesis Jones, 23, of Petersburg. Jackson was a father of two and a soon-to-be grandfather, according to family members who spoke with local media following the shooting.
Drevon Jackson-Brown, 25, of Henrico County, was taken into custody Saturday afternoon and charged with first-degree murder, malicious wounding and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Edwards confirmed that Jackson-Brown is the brother of Dominic Jackson.
Carlos Johnson Jr., 26, of Henrico County, was arrested Thursday night and faces identical charges. Shaquan Morris, 22, also of Henrico County, was arrested early Friday morning and has been charged with first-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. All three are scheduled to appear in court Monday.
A complex investigation
Edwards described the case as among the most complex his department has investigated, with forensic investigators and detectives working without a day off since the shooting took place. He said the shooting began outside the clubs in Shockoe Bottom rather than inside, and that while investigators believe other people present had firearms and were discharging them, they are confident they have identified and charged those responsible for the two deaths.
Edwards said he expects the arrests to bring some measure of relief to those most affected by the shooting, noting that frustration had grown in the weeks since the incident as the public waited for answers.
Mayor Danny Avula joined Edwards at Saturday’s press conference, where Commonwealth’s Attorney Colette Wallace McEachin said her office would prosecute the cases to the fullest extent of the law and extended condolences to the families of the victims.
Police said additional charges are possible as the investigation continues.
