Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed a lawsuit against the gaming platform Roblox, claiming the company deliberately misled parents about serious safety risks facing children on the site. The legal action puts Paxton alongside attorneys general from Kentucky and Louisiana who have raised similar concerns about the platform’s handling of child protection.
Growing concerns over platform safety
The lawsuit centers on allegations that Roblox has become a dangerous environment for young users despite marketing itself as family-friendly entertainment. Paxton described the platform as a breeding ground for predators in his announcement, emphasizing that corporations enabling child abuse will face serious legal consequences.
Roblox operates a massive online gaming platform where users can play individually or connect with others worldwide. The site has gained popularity among children by offering educational games that teach coding, physics, and problem-solving skills. Users can also access developer tools to create their own gaming experiences.
These creative features have led to problematic content appearing on the platform. Violent and sexual material has surfaced through user-generated games, while communication features allowing interaction with strangers have raised additional safety concerns among parents and advocacy groups.
Roblox responds to mounting criticism
The San Mateo-based company expressed disappointment with the lawsuit, stating it preferred collaborative solutions over legal battles. Roblox representatives said the company shares Paxton’s commitment to protecting young users online and has implemented various safety measures to address concerns.
The gaming giant has introduced several protective features in recent years. New age verification technology uses video selfies and other methods to estimate player ages before allowing communication privileges. The platform also announced restrictions preventing children under 13 from messaging others without explicit parental permission.
Company executives have previously acknowledged parental concerns about the platform. Chief executive Dave Baszucki told parents uncomfortable with their children using Roblox that they should trust their own judgment about allowing access to the games.
Texas joins multistate legal challenge
The Texas lawsuit adds momentum to growing legal pressure facing the gaming company. Private plaintiffs have also filed cases alleging the platform has become a haven for child predators and sexual exploitation. Similar concerns have prompted legal action against other social media platforms, including a January lawsuit Paxton filed against TikTok.
Roblox reported averaging 151.5 million daily active users in the third quarter, with 83% of users located outside the United States and Canada. The company disclosed that 40% of daily active users were under age 13 in 2024, highlighting the significant child population on the platform.
International governments have also taken action against Roblox. Turkey banned the platform entirely over child exploitation concerns, while Singapore scrutinized the site after discovering a radicalized teenager had joined ISIS-themed servers that simulated real conflict zones.
Safety measures and ongoing challenges
The company has implemented controls allowing parents to restrict how their children communicate and access content on the platform. Roblox also prohibits image sharing and works with law enforcement agencies on safety issues.
Despite these measures, parents and children continue reporting disturbing content and abuse experiences on the platform. The gap between Roblox’s family-friendly marketing and actual user experiences has become a central point in the legal challenges.
The outcome of these lawsuits could influence how gaming platforms handle child safety requirements and parental transparency. As online gaming continues growing among young audiences, the balance between creative freedom and protective oversight remains a contentious issue for both companies and regulators.
