The House of the Dragon Season 3 premiere episode has ended with the death of Jacaerys Velaryon and his dragon, Vermax. Rhaenyra has now lost two sons, and from the next episode, we will see her slowly transform from being the Realm’s Delight into a queen who wants blood.
While the House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 2 trailer isn’t out yet, a Weeks Ahead trailer has revealed what we can expect to see in the upcoming episodes of the show. Here are all the spoilers for the upcoming episode.
House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 2 spoilers include Rhaenyra’s transformation and King’s Landing’s doom
The biggest incident of the Season 3 premiere episode is the death of Jacaerys Velaryon. Rhaena joins the Battle of Gullet on the untamed wild dragon, Sheepstealer. Since the dragon isn’t well bonded with Rhaena, it burns whatever it wants to, ignoring Rhaena’s orders. This distracts Jace and forces Vermax straight into the line of enemy fire.
Vermax is hit by weighted grapnel and ballista attacks from the Triarchy fleet, which drags the dragon and Jace into the ocean. Jace survives the crash and detaches himself from his dragon, but as he surfaces in the water, he is struck and killed by a flight of crossbow arrows.
In the Weeks Ahead trailer, we see Rhaenyra find out about Jace’s death and, understandably, fall apart. We also see her ask someone,
“How could you?”
while the visual that plays alongside is that of Rhaena looking scared. It is not confirmed that Rhaenyra directs the question at Rhaena, but given the nature of the question and framing of that particular section of the trailer, it looks like she will ask Rhaena how she could ride an inexperienced and wild dragon into the battle.
While it is unlikely that Rhaenyra would punish her stepdaughter brutally, there will definitely be some consequences for Rhaena since what she did was indeed extremely irresponsible. Besides, at a different point in the trailer, we also see Rhaenyra ask someone,
“Have you not betrayed your queen?”
in Dragonstone, and this might be directed at Rhaena or Ser Lorent Marbrand, or both.
In House of the Dragon Season 3 episode 1, when Sharako Lohar and Lord Corlys Velaryon were fighting each other, Corlys fell into the water, and we didn’t see what happened to him after. Alyn of Hull became the one who went after Sharako Lohar and killed her. The weeks ahead trailer shows Corlys’ body wash up somewhere, confirming that he’s not dead, and we’ll most likely see him in episode 2.
In the trailer, we also see Daemon tell Rhaenyra that she will get justice for Jace’s death, but Rhaenyra’s response to him solidifies what we already know: Rhaenyra is going to embrace her true Targaryen self and show no mercy going forward. She tells Daemon:
“I will never have justice. But what crumbs of it may be snatched, I will devour.”
Alicent had promised Rhaenyra King’s Landing and said that she would make sure it was undefended since Aemond was supposed to fly to Harrenhal to fight Daemon. However, Aegon abdicating the throne changed plans, with Aemond staying back at King’s Landing as regnant king.
To keep her word to Rhaenyra, in House of the Dragon Season 3 premiere episode, Alicent finally convinced Aemond to fly to Harrenhal with Vhaegar and join Ser Criston Cole and Gwayne Hightower. Aemond thinks Daemon is at Harrenhal, but if the show follows the books, he won’t find Daemon there and will take the castle and will wipe out almost all important members of House Strong.
With King’s Landing undefended, in House of the Dragon Season 3 episode 2, we will see Rhaenyra and Daemon attack King’s Landing. The Weeks Ahead trailer shows us glimpses of soldiers dead at the castle, and we know that Rhaenyra was already planning on heading to King’s Landing. The only slight change is that with Jace dead, Rhaenyra will be far more ruthless to anyone who stands in her way.
The trailer ends with Rhaenyra saying,
“I wear my father’s crown. My enemies will not deny me my right.”
This sets the stage for episode 2 of the new season and also the episodes that will follow.
House of the Dragon Season 3 episodes air on HBO on Sundays at 9 pm ET.
