Half Man is a turbulent, tense narrative about two men who are connected in ways they probably wouldn’t like. We have Niall, who has an unexpected encounter with his brother Ruben at his wedding and things soon get violent as the two men confront their past. The series then moves back and forth across nearly four decades, tracing their bond from their teenage years in the late 1980s to adulthood.

Talking to GQ Magazine about his thoughts on creating the show, Gadd stated,

“I felt it was interesting to explore dysfunctional manhood, where it comes from, and how it kind of evolves over time. Why male camaraderie is so intoxicating for people, and why male bonds are so strong, but also why the repercussions of negative male behaviour from that can be also extreme.”

The show follows the two men and their relationship since their teenage years and how it shaped them in becoming who they are. Niall becomes a gentle and introspective man while Ruben becomes more violent and is marked by anger and instability.

Gadd further adds,

“I wasn’t so much interested in just showing a violent man doing violent things all the time. I was interested in contextualising that behaviour, and digging into why men have that bond. People will say, you know, the show is about masculinity. But I sometimes think it’s about two men who struggle to love each other, and don’t really know how to do that.”

More details about Half Man will be revealed soon.
