Regular looking house was loved by millions in hilarious comedy show

IT may look like any other semi-detached house, but this property was home to one of the nation’s beloved comedy characters.

The famous property has been viewed by over 52 million people – but the real-life neighbours aren’t enjoying the attention.

A sleepy town in Northleach, Gloucestershire, was the filming location for Kerry Mucklowe’s home in the mockumentary sitcom ‘This Country’.

The BAFTA nominated BBC Three comedy ran for three series, following the lives of cousins Kerry and Kurtan Mucklowe, played by real-life siblings Daisy May and Charlie Cooper.

Kerry lives in the house with her mother, an unseen voice heard from upstairs at various points throughout the show.

The series was shot in and around Northleach, with other recognisable locations including the marketplace and its bus shelter, where the cousins frequently loiter.

Fans will also be delighted to recognise Nangles Allotments, where Kerry looks after her chickens in series three.

The siblings wrote the series, inspired by their experience growing up in the nearby market town of Cirencester.

The long-suffering vicar’s parish, St Mary’s, was also filmed locally at the Church of St Peter and St Paul.

Church View, a little rise in the town, was used as the location for a row of lock-up garages, while Fairford Bowls Club was used in several scenes throughout the series.

Both of these locations feature in the show’s top-rated episode, series two, episode six, titled ‘Family Loyalties’.

This features Kerry’s ill-fated business venture with her dad, storing vacuum cleaners in the garages, as well as Kurtan’s new job at the bowls club.

As the series grew in popularity, fans began to visit Northleach in increasing numbers to see its cult-favourite locations.

But locals have been divided on its depiction of their village, and the visitors it has drawn.

Emma Nevins, who lives in the house next door to Kerry’s, said: “Every weekend you get cars full of people pulling up and walking up the path and taking photos of the house.

“So that’s really strange. This is just our home.”

She told Gloucestershire Live she did not think the series was an accurate representation of the village.

“Just the way they act, Kerry and Kurtan, the way they behave – I don’t think it does represent the youth of Northleach really,” Emma said.

Another resident, Keith Lawrence, agreed, and said he found the portrayal of the area offensive.

He said: “I find it sad in a way that it’s knocking Northleach. It’s taking the p*** out of Northleach.”

The sitcom’s final series aired in 2020, but now Daisy has revealed that the pair are working together again while appearing on The One Show to promote their new ghost-hunting series ‘Nightwatch’.

The siblings were asked about a potential ‘This Country’ comeback to which Daisy replied: “Yeah! I mean just pay us and we’ll do anything, literally.”

Charlie also suggested contacting their dad, Paul Cooper, who plays Kerry’s absent father Martin Mucklowe, and offers an expert local tour of the filming locations.

“At weekends he’s doing private tours of the set locations just to earn a bit of dough,” he said. “Message him on Instagram if you fancy it.”

Daisy added: “The funniest thing was, though, he then ends the tour in the local pub, which we filmed at, and was seething because the bar staff didn’t know who he was.”

The real-life pub in question is The Sherbourne Arms, a historic Cotswolds pub that was used for The Keepers Arms in the show.

The Cotswolds have long been a top location for film and TV crews, drawn to the area for its honey-coloured stone, picturesque countryside, and grand old architecture, with fans flocking to see iconic filming locations.

Fittingly named Snowshill, the village appears under a white blanket of snow, with Bridget trudging up its winding roads to get back to her family home.

Poldark

Chavenage House is a stunning 400-year-old manor near the market town of Tetbury and featured as Trenwith House, the ancestral home of Aidan Turner’s brooding Captain Poldark.

The Elizabethan house with its sweeping front drive has also featured in Wolf Hall, Barry Lyndon and an episode of Poirot.

Rivals

Irish actor Aidan Turner returned to Chavenage House again recently, to film the first series of Rivals, the racy series set in the fictional county of Rutshire.

Corsham, a Wiltshire market town at the southwestern edge of the Cotswolds, has also featured, with fans spotting star David Tennant filming series two there over the summer.
