Pittsburgh hit-and-run driver fled while victim lay dying

A man is dead and Pittsburgh police are actively searching for a driver who struck him and fled the scene, leaving him lying in the street in the city’s East Hills neighborhood late Thursday night.

What happened on Bennett Street

The incident unfolded around 11:30 p.m. near the intersection of Bennett Street and Oakwood Street along the Homewood South and East Hills border. According to investigators, the victim was walking in the middle of Bennett Street when an SUV traveling westbound struck him. The SUV driver stopped immediately and got out to check on the man.

What happened next was captured on surveillance footage from a nearby building. As the SUV driver was walking back toward the victim, a second vehicle, a gray Toyota Prius, came down Bennett Street, struck the man a second time and appeared to drag him a short distance toward the corner of an alley. The Prius then pulled into the alley, where it stopped for nearly two minutes. The driver then left without rendering aid or contacting emergency services, leaving the victim in the street.

Medics pronounced the man dead at the scene. The county medical examiner’s office had not released the victim’s name as of this morning.

The vehicle police are looking for

Pittsburgh police are asking the public to be on the lookout for a silver or gray Toyota Prius bearing Pennsylvania license plate NCL-1036. Anyone with information about the vehicle or its driver is asked to call 412-432-4776.

A neighborhood that has seen this before

Residents and business owners near the scene described the intersection as one with a documented history of traffic concerns. Emmett Wilson, owner of Golden Triangle Distributors, a business at the intersection, told reporters the area has had a long-running problem with speeding vehicles and accidents. Neighbor James Bey said he was devastated by the loss and troubled by the thought of the driver continuing on as though nothing had happened.

The investigation into the fatal hit-and-run remains active. Police have not indicated whether any suspects have been identified in connection with the Prius, and no arrests had been announced as of today.
