The Punisher: One Last Kill arrived this May and while we got Punisher back, fans have been wondering where Jason R. Moore’s Curtis Hoyle has been all this time. Although Moore has returned to the role, it seems he is only appearing in hallucinations rather than in the flesh, and that distinction changes everything. Is he dead? or is he alive off the grid? Here’s what you should know.
We are only getting to see Curtis through Frank’s vivid hallucinations throughout, but never in a single physical scene. When a character who was very much alive at the end of a previous season suddenly only exists inside the protagonist’s head, the implication tends to lean one way and fans are thinking the worst.
Castle frequently sees Curtis as things get chaotic around him. That said, it’s not memory that floats his mind, but an active, nagging presence which hints at something that happened off screen. On top of that, what he hallucinates also matter. He mainly comes in to echo the promise of how honorable a Recon Marine is, he also mocks Castle that he has nothing left to do after avenging his family’s death. This changes things because instead of being a cheery, positive voice, Curtis feels like a manifestation of Castle’s fear and anxiety.
With all these clues, the show sort of implies he could have died between The Punisher season 2 finale and The Punisher: One Last Kill, although there’s no evidence for this yet. The weight of his absence is heavy, and hopefully the show addresses it soon.
What could Curtis’s death in The Punisher: One Last Kill mean?
Curtis’ death, if confirmed, could serve as a symbol of Frank’s deepening isolation and unresolved guilt, along with the psychological scars already left by his family’s murder. Following Frank this season is a different story. He’s isolated, hopeless and upsetting, and losing Curtis could be a reason behind his sorrow.
There’s another possibility worth sitting with, though. It’s possible that Frank decided to keep his distance from Curtis to keep him safe, especially after Jigsaw already targeted him in previous seasons. Maybe Curtis is alive somewhere, and Frank’s guilt over the distance he created is what’s projecting him into these visions. Either reading works, which is probably why the show hasn’t confirmed either one.
No definitive answer is provided before The Punisher: One Last Kill ends, leaving the door open for a future MCU project to address Curtis’ fate. That’s both frustrating and kind of honest. Frank Castle lives in ambiguity so of course his best friend does too.
